Paper Talk: Wide boy Jimmy can be Jewell's gem

... Francis and Graham Kavanagh's partnership in the middle.

With Lee McCulloch on the other side, the Latics engine room has a slightly narrow look to it with no natural winger – Gary Teale has only been on the fringes.

But Jewell is happy with that shape and the way Bullard has taken to the new role over the last few weeks.

The double manager of the month winner told the Evening Post: "Looking at the ProZone statistics, most of our attacking play comes down the right.

"On the other side we have Lee McCulloch, who is a right-footed player and prefers to come inside.

"That is the shape of our team, that is how we do things here and so far it's worked well for us.

"Jimmy himself would prefer to play in the centre of midfield because he is not naturally a winger.

"But we will get less exposed as a team that way because we play quite narrow and tight in the middle of the park.

"There's a lot more to come from Jimmy, and while he's in a slightly unfamiliar position, we feel he can benefit the team out there at the moment.

"Kav and Damien are doing well in the centre, and their play complements Jimmy well."

Jewell should have his first-choice midfield quartet available to tackle Arsenal at the JJB Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

He pulled McCulloch out of the Scotland squad for the weekend friendly against the United States to protect his damaged medial ligament which has troubled him all season.

The injury is healing but Latics thought a fortnight's rest between Premiership action would benefit him.

Jewell said: "I think this international break came at a good time for us, even though we're in the middle of a good run of results.

"We've had Jason Roberts, Arjan de Zeeuw, Leighton Baines and Lee carrying injuries, so having no match at the weekend gave them a breather.

"It meant Lee and Bainesy pulling out of international duty but it wouldn't have been fair to them to go and play."

Baines strained a groin muscle in the win at Portsmouth, de Zeeuw has been carrying a slight knee injury for a while, and Roberts is just back after making a quicker than expected recovery from a torn thigh.

Latics still had three players away on international duty – Ryan Taylor, Henri Camara and Josip Skoko.

Taylor played in England Under-21s 1-1 draw with France at White Hart Lane on Friday night, and has travelled for tomorrow's return leg in Nancy.

Camara was in the Senegal team which beat South Africa 3-2, the striker due back in Wigan for training tomorrow.

And Skoko was an unused substitute as Australia lost 1-0 to Uruguay in the first leg of a World Cup play-off in Montevideo.

The second leg takes place in Sydney on Wednesday and, as a result, it's unlikely Skoko will be involved against Arsenal.
