Paper Talk: Wait for it

Claims were made last night that the manager had put pen to paper on a five-year deal, tying him to the Premiership newcomers until 2010.

But he told the Evening Post today that nothing would be signed until his coaching staff had agreed their deals.

And Jewell added the extension he has agreed with chairman Dave Whelan is in fact for three years.

Jewell discussed terms with Whelan on the club holiday in Barbados last week, shaking hands on a deal in principle.

Together

Jewell, though, is fiercely loyal to his backroom team and wants them all to pen contracts at the same time.

He said: "The deal is agreed in principal but nothing is signed yet – whatever has been reported elsewhere.

"I'm waiting until all my staff's new contracts are done and then we will sign together, which is only right.

"Also, contrary to reports, it is not a five-year deal to the summer of 2010.

"The deal in principal is three extra years until 2008."

There's no question Jewell will eventually put pen to paper – but he sees no reason to rush things.

He still has a year left on his current deal, the extension meaning improved terms on the remaining term plus two further years.

Jewell is in line to become Latics' longest-serving manager.

Spending next season at the helm will see him match Ian McNeill's five years in charge, and his new deal takes him well beyond that.

He's coming up to his fourth anniversary in charge, a period in which he has taken the club from the old Second Division through to the Premiership.

Meanwhile, Jewell has been explaining why the squad will have a low-key build-up to their top-flight debut.

Five pre-season friendly matches have been fixed up with the possibility of a sixth, none of them against big-name opposition.

He said: "It was a similar approach last year, no really big games, just a chance for the players to get their match fitness.

"We won must of them fairly comfortably and I did wonder at the time whether we were fully prepared.

"But we took the confidence from this victories into the season and hit the ground running, starting the season very strongly."

Latics report back for pre-season training on July 1 before heading to Denmark for a high-intensity training camp a fortnight later.

On their return, matches have been arranged against Burscough on July 28, Macclesfield (July 30), Morecambe (August 2), Southport (August 3) and Accrington Stanley (August 6).

All the games are away, with the first team in action at Macclesfield, Morecambe and Accrington.

A sixth game is also pencilled in for July 26, although the club are still arranging the opposition.

Jewell added: "By clinching automatic promotion and avoiding the play-offs, we have had the time to arrange the fixtures we want.

"There will be a lot of hard work for the players but that's got to be expected because we need to be fitter and stronger than ever before."
