Paper Talk: Up n' away

They make the short journey to Preston on Saturday lunchtime and a 13th win on the road would pile the pressure on promotion rivals Ipswich who are playing later in the afternoon.

Anything less than a victory for the Tractor Boys against Crewe would see Latics clinch top flight football just 27 years after being accepted into the Football League.

Jewell's side boast the best away record in the Championship this season, with 12 wins, six draws and just four defeats. Only leaders Sunderland and play-off chasing Derby can match 12 wins but both have lost seven games on their travels.

Latics have in fact picked up one more point away than they have at the JJB, so it's with confidence they head to Deepdale for the 12.15pm kick-off.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "Our away record is second to none this season and has been a strength of ours. We've got more points away and sometimes it does suit our style of play when the home side has to come at us.

"When you play at home, the onus is on you to attack, and away we do like to break on sides when we can.

"On Saturday we know that Preston will come at us. They might still need a point to get in the play-offs depending on other results but sometimes it's dangerous just to play for a point. You are better off going out there, forgetting what you need and just concentrate on winning the match.

"That is what Preston will be doing and what we will be doing on Saturday."

Latics' only league defeat on their travels in 2005 was at Gillingham in February, previous to that Burnley beating them at Turf Moor on December 28.

Jewell has not given away any hints in terms of his team selection for the Deepdale derby, although Brett Ormerod's departure will mean a return up front for Nathan Ellington.

There could be a recall for Gary Teale on the right wing because of his good track record against North End this season and last.

"Just because we drew our last game against QPR, it doesn't mean there will automatically be wholesale changes," said Jewell. "It might be horses for courses, I don't know yet. I have a fully-fit squad to pick from and everyone is in consideration.

"We played well at Preston last season, it was one of our better performances especially in the second-half."

Meanwhile, Jewell has questioned the kick-off time for the game with it coming at such a crucial stage of the season.

They have nearly a three-hour head start on Ipswich's match, and the Latics manager feels all games should be kicking off at the same time – as they do for the final afternoon of the campaign a week on Sunday.

He said: "We could have a major advantage come 3pm on Saturday, or it could be Ipswich who have the advantage.

"What is the point of kicking off at the same time on the last day when the previous two games have been just as vital?

"But it's happened now and we have to get on with it."

Latics Reserves won 1-0 at Stoke yesterday, Alan Mahon on target. Emerson Thome made a successful comeback after more than two months out.
