Paper Talk: Turk permit

... today while Paul Jewell has confirmed a keen interest in Trabzonspor striker Fatih Tekke.

But the club is staying tight-lipped on the progress of their shock attempt to bring Michael Owen to the JJB Stadium.

It was revealed yesterday that Dave Whelan had sounded out the England striker's advisors about a move away from Real Madrid, with the chairman prepared to pay £10m to get Owen on a short-term deal.

Manager Jewell had been hoping the approach would be kept under wraps, and issued a "no comment" statement to questions on the subject.

He was more forthcoming, though, on his interest in Turkish international Tekke and the imminent arrival of Australian midfielder Skoko.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "Tekke is a player we are interested in. We have tried to get him a couple of times and he's one we are pursuing at the moment.

"As for Skoko, he was due to start training with us today having sorted out his work permit and visa."

Both Tekke and Skoko are experienced internationals who Jewell hopes would be a major asset for Latics in the Premiership.

Tekke, 27, who skippers Trabzonspor, scored seven goals in eight World Cup qualifiers for Turkey last season after emerging as successor to Hakan Suker.

His club are prepared to sell, though, after failing to qualify for this season's Champions League. Skoko has 40 caps for Australia and has played all his senior career in Europe – at Hajduk Split in Croatia, Racing Genk in Belgium, and for the last two seasons with Genclerbirligi in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Signing him has proved a long-running saga, the deal with the 28-year-old agreed before the start of the season only for the transfer to be held up by red tape over his visa and work permit.

Jewell said: "I think Josip will be fit to play straight away because he's done most of the pre-season and trained with Australia in Holland last week.

"I'm looking forward to having him here because he's got a wealth of experience and has played at the highest level.

"He can play anywhere across the midfield of the park and that versatility will be important for us.

"I've seen him play in a holding role for Australia, on the left of a three man midfield, and just behind the front player.

"If we can get him, another couple of signings, and have some of our injured lads back, it will be a big boost.

"Instead of picking from a squad of 16 like I had to at Charlton, I'll have 21 or 22 players to choose from."

Latics' interest in Owen caused a great deal of surprise, but they are serious about a deal for the unsettled Madrid star.

While the chances of landing him are only slim, Whelan is working on the basis that if you don't ask, you don't get.

At this stage it's a case of waiting to see if Owen is interested, no bid having been made to Real despite talk of a £10m offer.

Meanwhile, the leg injury suffered by Gary Teale at Charlton on Saturday isn't as bad as first feared.

An X-ray showed no fracture to the fibula bone, and while the winger missed training yesterday, he was able to do some work in the gym.

Jewell said: "It's now a case of waiting to see how the injury settles down.

"It's too early in the week to say whether or not he's doubtful for Sunderland."
