Paper Talk: Title talk

They closed the gap on table-toppers Sunderland at the weekend to three points and also strengthened their automatic promotion hopes by increasing the lead on Ipswich to two points.

Brett Ormerod scored twice to give Latics a 2-0 win at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday, throwing the promotion race wide open ahead of Ipswich's meeting with Sunderland yesterday lunchtime.

That ended in a 2-2 draw, a result which probably suited the Black Cats more than the Tractor Boys.

The Latics manager said: "I suppose my head said a Sunderland win once we had won our game, but I want to win the Championship.

"Had Ipswich won that, it would have tightened things up at the top and would have been the worse result if I'm being sensible about it."

Jewell still insists it will only be on the final day of the season that everything is sorted out.

But things could become clearer this coming Saturday when all three promotion hopefuls are in action.

A win for Sunderland over Leicester coupled with either a draw or defeat for Ipswich at Leeds would send Mick McCarthy's men up.

Latics can't book their place in the top flight this weekend but would hope Leeds can inflict some damage on Ipswich.

Were Ipswich to lose at Elland Road and Latics beat Queens Park Rangers, Jewell's side would clinch promotion with a win at Preston on April 30 – and a draw would effectively be enough due to their superior goal difference.

Jewell isn't reaching for the calculator just yet, preferring to reflect on a job well done at Leicester.

He said: "We played as well as we have done for a few weeks. Considering the pressure the players are under, we played with great composure and a lot of quality.

"We looked dangerous on the break and contained them quite well, and in the end we got our reward.

"After we lost the two home games to West Ham and Sunderland, the pressure was on us and a lot of questions were being asked.

"That is the nature of the game and this group of players have bounced back with two big away wins.

"I really did think they were excellent against Leicester and now we must build on that this weekend."

Much of the talk on Saturday revolved around Jewell's decision to drop Nathan Ellington to the bench.

It was the first time during his Latics career that a dip in form had seen The Duke left out of the starting line-up.

But with Ormerod and Jason Roberts having impressed at Cardiff a week earlier and Lee McCulloch fit to return on the left wing, the division's top scorer was reduced to a late cameo role.

Jewell said: "Leaving Nathan out was a big call for me but I felt he been a bit jaded of late.

"He is this division's leading scorer and it was difficult to leave him out but a rest sitting on the bench might do him good.

"Nathan didn't agree with me but credit to him, he took the decision exceptionally well.

"Brett has been champing at the bit, he played at Cardiff and deserved another chance, and he's won us the game.

"He's only 5ft 9 or 5ft 10 but he's exceptional in the air for his size which he showed with the second goal."

Jewell was just as pleased with the way the defence performed against David Connolly and Mark De Vries – the Foxes' little and large strike pairing.

He said: "I thought our two centre-backs were excellent.

"De Vries is difficult to handle because of his sheer size, Connolly always causes problems, while they also put Dion Dublin up there.

"We coped very well, didn't let them get round the back of us, and we made all the right decisions.

"I thought we looked good as a unit."

Latics youth team contest the Lancashire FA Youth Cup Final against Oldham at Boundary Park tonight (kick-off 7pm).
