Paper Talk: Three 'n easy...

Latics begin the trilogy with tomorrow's home clash with Millwall before visiting Brighton on Tuesday and Nottingham Forest a week on Saturday.

Three victories would ensure leadership of the table going into the Easter break and push them significantly closer to the Premiership.

Manager Jewell said: "This is an important week for us with nine points up for grabs.

"We have to be very careful in these games because the last time there was such a sequence, Ipswich went into it with a five-point lead and are now three behind us.

"I don't like looking too far ahead and of course the biggest game is the next one, but if we can play well and pick up points, we will be in a strong position."

Beating Millwall at the JJB would take Latics on to 72 points – two more than they got last season – and six more at Brighton and Forest would set them up nicely for the final seven game run-in starting next month.

Jewell, though, isn't taking anything for granted against the Lions, despite them winning only two of their last 10 league games.

He said: "Millwall have beaten both Ipswich and Sunderland this season and I don't want us added to that list.

"I've seen them play a few times and they are mean defensively, don't score a lot of goals, but are tough to beat.

"By all accounts they were unlucky not to beat Leeds last Sunday and they will be coming here to make things difficult.

"Our supporters will have a big part to play tomorrow because Millwall won't bring a big following, unlike Leeds and Ipswich in recent weeks.

"Those last two home games have been brilliant to be involved in, not just as a player or manager, but as a supporter.

"Hopefully we can get 12,000 or 13,000 Wiganers in the ground and they can get right behind the lads.

"It's a big lift when you see the place two-thirds full, and when you look at the games when we've played in front of big crowds, the results have often been positive."

Latics' main fitness doubt tomorrow concerns Matt Jackson who limped out of the Ipswich game last week with a slight hamstring strain.

David Wright stands by to replace him at the heart of the defence although there is still an outside chance the skipper could feature.

Top scorer Nathan Ellington will play despite a scare earlier in the week when he twice dislocated his right shoulder – the second time rolling over in bed.

He trained as normal yesterday and on Wednesday, and was being put through a final session this morning. Strike partner Jason Roberts sat out training yesterday to rest a long-standing groin injury, but will play.

Graham Kavanagh makes his second appearance following last week's £350,000 switch from Cardiff, and Jewell hopes the Republic of Ireland international can be

a calming in-fluence in the middle of the park. He said: "It's an area we've been desperately trying to get right since Per Frandsen's injury earlier in the season.

"We have travelled far and wide in search of a holding midfielder, and we've almost found Kav on the doorstep.

"Hopefully he can do a job for us and that's taking nothing away from the other lads who have come in and done fantastically well.

"They must have done well because we are top of the league, but I just felt we needed someone who could sit there and hold the midfield.

"Jimmy Bullard likes to go forward, Alan Mahon does, while Gareth Whalley is more of player who likes to keep the ball moving.

"Kav did well on his debut considering he'd only met his team-mates the day before and there is plenty more to come from him."
