Paper Talk: Teale joins the injured list

The winger was hurt in Tuesday night's goalless draw at Watford, joining Per Frandsen and Matt Jackson on the sidelines.

While his injury is not thought to be too serious, it should keep him out of Rotherham's visit to the JJB Stadium on Saturday.

After that, Teale has a fortnight to get himself fit as Latics are without a game due to the international break.

Manager Paul Jewell said: "Gary hurt his knee just before half-time at Watford but he went out for the second-half to see if he could play on.

"But almost straight away it became obvious he couldn't continue so we're sending him for a scan to see what is wrong.

"We're having a bit of a problem with knees at the moment with Per and Jacko already out of action."

Although Teale hasn't rediscovered the form he showed in the second part of last season, his expected absence is something Jewell could do without.

The squad was never the biggest anyway, and the recent spate of injuries has left numbers thin on the ground.

Frandsen is out for the season with a torn cruciate ligament and Jackson's strained knee ligaments are likely to keep him sidelined for between three and six weeks.

Jason Jarrett who broke his leg and tore ankle ligaments in pre-season is still a week or so away from taking up some light jogging and so won't be back in the first-team frame until the end of the month at the earliest.

If Teale doesn't make it on Saturday, David Graham is his likely replacement on the right wing.

It would be his first Championship start since a £215,000 summer move from Torquay, his league action to date limited to appearances off the bench.

While his preferred position is up front - the role Latics brought him to play - the right wing is not unfamiliar territory to the Scotsman.

He took Teale's place on Tuesday and Jewell was pleased with his contribution.
"It's not David's position but he worked well up and down the pitch, and didn't let us down," said the boss.

"If Gary isn't right for Saturday, it's likely we'll have to play him there again and I wouldn't have a problem doing that."

One piece of good news on the selection front for Jewell is that Lee McCulloch will be available after serving a one-game ban.

His return will give Alan Mahon the chance to move inside and challenge Gareth Whalley for a central midfield slot.

Meanwhile, Latics' derby clash with Preston North End at the JJB has been chosen for live broadcast on Sky Sports.

It's been put back a day until Sunday, December 5, with a 12.30pm kick-off time.

Latics will also be playing in front of the cameras on October 31 with their visit to Leeds being televised.
