Paper Talk: Taylor in, Ze Castro set to follow

The Wigan Athletic manager hopes protracted negotiations for Portuguese centre-half Ze Castro can soon come to a successful conclusion as he builds for the Premiership.

Talks have been going on for more than a week, and in the meantime Jewell had time to wrap up a rapid deal for Tranmere's Taylor.

Amicably

Latics have paid £750,000 up front for the 20-year-old, the fee rising up to £1.25m depending on appearances.

Taylor had his first two training sessions with the club yesterday, and Jewell is delighted with the full-back's ability and willingness to join his Premiership newcomers.

He told the Evening Post: "Some of the deals we have tried to do have broken down or gone on forever, but this one with Ryan was done in 10 minutes, which was great.

"I think that speaks volumes for him and for the lad's agent too.

"The deal with Tranmere was done pretty quickly and amicably as well, and I think we caught a few people by surprise with this one.

"We were waiting behind the scenes and made our move when we believed the time was right.

"Ryan is a great young player, very versatile and has bundles of energy.

"He can play in a number of positions – right-back, right midfielder, in the centre of midfield – and is one of those natural footballers.

"I think he will be a great signing for us.

"There was talk of Everton and Arsenal having a look at him, but maybe he wouldn't have got straight into their first team squads.

"But he will certainly be in the picture for us and pushing for a regular start – the lad has a big future."

Taylor, who turns 21 next month, admitted he jumped at the chance to move to Wigan once he knew of their interest last weekend.

And he took the advice of close pal Leighton Baines when thinking the transfer through.

"I first heard about the possibility of a deal last Friday or Saturday, and Tranmere were happy for it to happen," said Taylor.

"Once I came here and looked at the players, it was an easy decision to make.

"Paul Jewell didn't really have to sell the club to me, he just told me 'what you see is what you get'.

"I knew that there had been bids from Everton which Tranmere had rejected, but as soon as Wigan came in, there was no walking away from it.

"This is the right club for me because I'm ambitious and playing in the Premiership will be unbelievable."

With three new signings on board, Jewell isn't resting on his laurels and hopes a deal for Ze Castro can soon be done.

The centre of defence is an area of the squad he's most anxious to bolster, and even if he lands Ze Castro, another centre-half remains on his shopping list.

Jewell said: "The centre of defence is an area we are really homing in on now.

"We definitely need one centre-half, ideally two.

"What I'm finding when dealing with foreign players and agents is that things becomes difficult and complicated when really they shouldn't be.

"You tend to find agents representing agents, it's crazy.

Fussy

"It is frustrating for myself and the supporters who want to see signings, but if I stick in there and continue to be fussy as I've been described, then we will get the right players in."

Meanwhile, Jewell is still waiting to hear whether Nathan Ellington will sign a new contract after the striker's agent indicated he would do a U-turn on his earlier decision to refuse fresh terms.

He said: "I got a call on Monday night to say Nathan wanted to sign his contract.

"The agent indicated he wanted to stay but I haven't heard anything since.

"If Nathan does want to stay, no one would be more delighted than me, but if he doesn't, he doesn't."

l Latics' opening day opponents Chelsea insist they will remain "fully supportive" of Jose Mourinho in the wake of the row over David Dein's right to a seat on the Football Association's board.

Mourinho claimed Arsenal have been given an easier ride with the Premiership fixture list and insinuated that the presence of Dein on the FA board had negative implications for Chelsea.
