Paper Talk: Striking out

While Jewell was pleased with the way they operated against Chelsea on Sunday, he knows another high quality forward is needed to meet the demands of the Premiership.

Norwich City's Dean Ashton is thought to be his No.1 target, although luring him away from Carrow Road could prove difficult.

Jewell tried to sign the England Under-21 international from Crewe in December last year, but Ashton opted for the Canaries instead.

It would need a bid far in excess of the £3m Norwich paid for him – perhaps up to £7m – to even start the ball rolling, and the striker is settled in East Anglia.

Jewell has refused to play the name game in the media when it comes to transfer targets, only admitting he was pursuing a new face.

He told the Evening Post: "We have good competition all through the team and the only place we're struggling for numbers at the moment is up front so we need to address that.

"We are making steady enquiries, names have been suggested, but I don't really want to comment on them."

Ironically, Norwich were linked with a £300,000 move for Latics right-back David Wright over the weekend, but the speculation was denied yesterday by both clubs.

An attacking trio of Roberts, Camara and a new signing, backed up with the option of playing Lee McCulloch up front, would give Jewell enough options going forward.

He is convinced current record signing Camara can be a big hit at the JJB Stadium, a view endorsed by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sunday.

Jewell said: "Henri is very quick, he can pick the ball up and worry teams with his pace. Mourinho told me before the game he thought Henri was a great signing for us."

The need for a third striker hit home when Ellington completed a £3m transfer to West Brom yesterday – the fee is a joint club record, equalling the figure Manchester United paid for Roy Carroll in 2001.

He has signed a four-year contract at The Hawthorns and could be in line for a debut against Portsmouth this weekend, match fitness permitting.

It proved something of a bitter-sweet move for him, with the Duke using his unveiling by the Baggies to thank Jewell for his management, but also take a swipe at Latics over their failure to agree a new contract with him.

He said: "If they had made me the offer I thought I should have got, I would have been inclined to stay there.

"I have no problem with Paul Jewell, I'm very grateful for what he has done for me and I'm sure he's very grateful to me for what I have done for him.

"I had a great time at Wigan and wish them all the best.

"It was sad to leave but you have to move on sometimes.

"I didn't go to the match on Sunday, I said goodbye on Saturday when I went to collect my stuff.

"I'm a person who doesn't like to upset people and I think I was taken advantage of.

"They took advantage of my good nature."

But Latics have insisted throughout the negotiations that they made every effort to hang on to his services, making two excellent contract offers.

Meanwhile, Lee McCulloch has pulled out of the Scotland squad for tomorrow night's friendly in Australia due to a leg injury.

It forced him to miss the Chelsea clash and he's stayed in Wigan in a bid to be fit for the visit to Charlton.

But Graham Kavanagh, another absentee on Sunday, has been allowed to join up with the Republic of Ireland who play Italy in Dublin tomorrow.

Jewell said: "Kav has gone to Ireland and he's okay now.

"He trained on Saturday and Sunday morning and we've let him go to see if he can get 45 minutes under his belt."

The midfielder has been out of action since hurting his heel in the friendly at Morecambe a fortnight ago.

Right-back Pascal Chimbonda picked up a knee injury against Chelsea and missed training yesterday.
