Paper Talk: Striking out

The transfer could even go through later today if Latics settle a fee with Burnley and agree personal terms.

Blake has broken his silence on the long-running saga by declaring his wish to team up again with Paul Jewell who he played under at Bradford.

He believes making the switch will offer him a more realistic chance of playing in the Premiership.

Latics, who were toppled from the Championship top spot by last night's 2-1
defeat at Ipswich, have been chasing 28-year-old Blake for three weeks.

Bids of £500,000, £600,000 and £700,000 have been rejected, but a package totalling more than £1m might now persuade the Turf Moor board to do business.

Jewell was playing his cards close to his chest at Portman Road last night, offering just one clue that the ball might have started rolling again.
With Jason Roberts

suspended for next Tuesday's visit to Burnley having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Ipswich, Jewell said: "We might get Blakey in for that one!"

Blake now clearly sees his future at Latics and is believed to have become frustrated that a move has yet to come to fruition.

He said: "I have never been engineering a move away from Burnley but the opportunity to join Wigan has come around and I've got to think of No.1.

"Every player wants to play in the Premiership if they can and I'm at a stage in my life where I need to be trying to get one last push there.

"Wigan are offering me a great opportunity to do that.

"It is all about ambition and it's nice to have probably the best team in this league wanting to sign you.

"I make no excuses that I would like to go and hopefully that can happen in the near future."

Clinching a deal to sign Blake would be a huge boost to Latics ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.

Jewell is eager for extra competition for places and knows Blake can fill a variety of positions.

The manager was bitterly disappointed by last night's reverse, Latics conceding twice after a 35-yard rocket from Leighton Baines had give them the lead.

He said: "I think the better side won and Ipswich had more desire than us which is the disappointing thing.

"We started well enough and looked like we would score every time we went forward.

"But Ipswich came back into the game, pinned us back and won more battles which cost us the points.

"It was a bit too open for my liking, played at a high tempo, and in the second half we didn't do enough to win the game.

"A lot of the problems were of our own making, and whenever the ball went up front, we seemed to lose it.

"We didn't pass it well enough, made too many wrong decisions all over the park and as a result, our defence was put under too much pressure.

"I felt sorry for the back four because they weren't given anywhere near enough protection.

"For Ipswich's winner, we had decent possession but then lost it, and Darren Bent got his just desserts because he kept going to the end."

Jewell, though, did give a well-deserved pat on the back for Baines whose 57th-minute goal was his first in senior football.

He said: "It was a fantastic strike from the lad and would have been nice had it given us a 1-0 win.

"It will mean a lot to him but unfortunately it hasn't counted for anything as far as the result is concerned."

Striker Roberts' fifth caution of the campaign came in the 81st minute for a show of dissent after being flagged offside.

A suspension for five yellows comes into effect after seven days, ruling him out of the Bank Holiday visit to Burnley.

Jewell said: "It was a silly booking for Jason and now he's got himself suspended."
