Paper Talk: Striker light

Last updated : 12 August 2005 By Wigan Evening Post.
Owls manager Paul Sturrock swooped for him to solve a striker shortage at Hillsborough and he is set to make his Wednesday debut against Southampton tomorrow.

A Latics exit for Ellington looks on the cards too after West Brom officially stepped up their interest in him yesterday.

Rejected

They have bid £3m for the 24-year-old, a figure which activates a clause in his contract allowing him to speak to them.

Talks have already started between the Baggies and Ellington's advisors, after the Duke rejected the latest contract offer from Latics on Wednesday.

It's not clear if Wigan have to sell once the £3m mark is reached, or whether that just allows interested parties to open negotiations.

But it looks like they are ready to cash in on a player who has less than a year to run on his contract and shows no signs of agreeing to an extension.

The Albion offer is a high one for someone untried at Premiership level and relatively close to coming out of contract.

Their manager Bryan Robson revealed his interest in public for the first time yesterday, admitting he was a big fan of the Duke.

He said: "He's a great athlete, and is very strong and quick.

"The lad has a good goalscoring record but I don't want to say anything further than that because he's not our player."

If Ellington follows Graham out of the exit, Latics would be left with Jason Roberts and Henri Camara as their only strikers.

So it's certain manager Paul Jewell would be back in the transfer market looking for replacements before the trading window shuts at the end of the month.

Graham's departure isn't a huge surprise – the 26-year-old has failed to make an impact since his £215,000 move from Torquay in June last year.

Signed as a striker, he made the majority of his 13 league starts on the right wing, coming off the bench on a further 17 occasions.

He scored just one goal in the 4-1 win over Coventry in October and his first team chances would have been slim in the Premiership.

On the incoming front, Arjan de Zeeuw finally completed his return to Latics yesterday in a £100,000 switch from Portsmouth.

The centre-half had been in Wigan since Tuesday, wrapping up his side of the deal quickly and training with the squad on Wednesday.

But there was a delay in Pompey releasing his registration which meant the transfer only went through yesterday.

De Zeeuw is almost certain to go straight into the Latics side to face Chelsea on Sunday.

He's the seventh new arrival over the summer, and midfielder Josip Skoko will take that figure to eight next week if his application for a work permit is successful.
