Paper Talk: Stay Top!

Four wins and two draws in August took them to the top of the Championship table, and that's a position the manager is keen to hold on to when hostilities resume following almost a fortnight of inactivity.

Much attention will be focused on the game which pitches the leaders against Dave Jones' pre-season promotion favourites, not least because of Jewell being widely linked with the Blackburn vacancy this week.

But as far as he is concerned, it's business at usual at Molineux tomorrow, with him playing a straight bat to the media speculation.

Jewell said: "We've had a long break and don't want to lose our momentum, but it's given us the chance to work on a few things on the training ground. Some of the lads have had some really intense fitness sessions in that time so I'm hoping that will have done us some good.

"Whether we wanted the break or not, it is there and every team in the division was in the same boat.

"Before it, we were on a good run, but football is all about the next result, not looking back on what has already taken place.

"It's very nice being top and I'd rather be there than the position Wolves are in at the moment, but it's where you are in May not September which counts.

"This time last year Ipswich were bottom of the table and still ended up in the play-offs while Crystal Palace were near the bottom in November and went up.

"We're looking forward to going to Wolves, and we'll go there full of confidence and trying to win the game."

One fitness concern is man of the moment Leighton Baines, who returned from duty with the England Under-21 side carrying a slight injury.

The hard pitch in Rybnik's Municipal Stadium where they took on Poland caused some discomfort in the youngster's hamstring but he's expected to play.

It's a clean bill of health as far as everyone else is concerned and an unchanged starting line-up is set to take the field for a seventh consecutive Championship game.

Jewell has pleasant memories of Molineux having seen Bradford clinch promotion to the Premiership there just over five years ago.

But it's his dress sense that day rather than the achievement on the pitch which the football world tend to remember him for.

He said: "That was probably the happiest day of my life football wise, but all people remember is how bad my gear was – it's tarnished me!

"I'll probably get the old suit out again although it might be a little bit loose on me now.

"Seriously though, what happened at Wolves with Bradford is now just a great memory, it doesn't count for anything tomorrow."

Jimmy Bullard will be making his first ever trip to Molineux and the midfielder is confident Latics can maintain their strong start to the season there.

He said: "It's a bit surprising how Wolves have started the season, but this is a tough league and all the team seem quite close.

"I think they will be there or thereabouts although hopefully we can beat them and stay up at the top.

"I've never played at Molineux before, but I've heard it's a brilliant stadium and I can't wait to get there and get stuck into the game.

"We've tended to play well in these big games and it would be nice to get another three points."

* Latics will feature on Soccer AM's crossbar challenge tomorrow, filming having taken place at Christopher Park yesterday.
