Paper Talk: Standards Rising

Although he is content with the unbeaten league start of four wins and three draws, the manager says his side deserved a maximum haul of points.

The weekend draw at Wolves cost them top spot with Ipswich taking over at the summit, but Latics have the chance to wrestle it back against Burnley at the JJB Stadium tonight (kick-off 8pm).

Ipswich have a tough trip to Stoke and it's hoped Jewell's men can take advantage of any slip up by them.

Jewell said: "I'm pleased with the points we have got so far, but I really do think we could have won all seven games.

"I'm not one of those managers who wears rose-tinted glasses, but we should have won thee games we've drawn.

"We were leading at some stage in all of them and in my opinion were the better side."

Against Wolves, Latics went behind for the first time this season, recovered to twice go in front, before the defence dropped off to allow their hosts a last-gasp equaliser.

Jewell said: "The players know that we didn't defend as we normally do, and I don't just mean the back four.

"Too often balls were coming into the box when they shouldn't have been.

"Fair play to the lads, they've worked hard in training since Saturday and hopefully we can put it right against Burnley.

"The first thing I worked on here was making sure we were hard to beat.

"While we have the flair going forward and are creating more chances in a better league, we still have to make sure we do the nitty-gritty part of the job.

"We have high expectations here now, and the way the club has moved forward in the last two years is unbelievable.

"We go into matches as favourites now rather than just hoping things work out well.

"Rather than people thinking of us as 'plucky Wigan' I enjoy the tag of being favourites as that means we are a good team.

"But enjoying the tag and producing it on the pitch are two different things."

Jewell will have to decide tonight whether to give his defence another chance or change the starting line-up for the first time in the league this season.

He has had centre-half Emerson Thome waiting patiently on the bench and could bring him into the frame.

The Brazilian was a late substitute on Saturday as Jewell threw on an extra defender to try and combat Wolves' four-strong strike force.

Tonight's game is the first derby clash of the season for Latics, and a good-sized crowd is expected.

Jewell said: "It should be a smashing atmosphere under the lights and a decent game of football. Burnley have started well under Steve Cotterill and these derby games are always tough."
