Paper Talk: Scots in call for Latics striker

The flying Scotsman, who has netted three goals in 12 games this season, has been drafted in by international coach Berti Vogts after suspensions to Everton's James McFadden and Blackburn Rovers striker Paul Dickov upset his plans.

Latics' assistant manager Chris Hutchings said: "Lee has come close to a full call-up in the past and has just missed out on those occasions but now, albeit it due to injuries, he has got his chance and it is up to him to go out there and show exactly why he has joined the squad.

"He has worked hard for us this season, scored a few goals and been an integral part of our good start so this call-up is well deserved and everyone at the club wishes him all the best and hopes he can go out there and do himself justice."

The Latics frontman, who arrived at the JJB Stadium from Motherwell three years ago, has played for his country 14 times at Under-21 level and featured in the B team in recent years, but this is his first cap for the senior side – and it could not have come in a more important game.

There were calls for Vogts' head after Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Norway and it has been suggested the German will be out of a job if his side does not win in Chisinau.

Hutchings added: "Scotland look to have a mountain to climb in order to qualify which makes this a very important match for them as well as for Lee.

"Hopefully he will get his chance, whether it is from the start or off the bench, and show the form he has shown for us this season.

"Hopefully if he is involved he will come through without any injuries problems which is obviously a worry for clubs when their players go off on international duty.

"Our main focus is on our league game at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday and we want all our players fit for that one."

Another Wigan player looking to add to his international caps is young full-back Leighton Baines who is in the England Under-21s squad which faces Azerbaijan tonight.

The 20-year-old, who made two starts in his country's European Championships wins over Austria and Poland last month, stayed on the bench when they defeated Wales 2-0 at Ewood on Friday night.

Hutchings added: "We went across to Blackburn hoping he would play but he was on the bench, but I am sure if he keeps playing well for us he will get another chance. When that is likely to happen you would have to ask Peter Taylor.

"We believe Leighton is one of the best young full-backs in the country at the moment and I am sure if Peter decides to switch his side around in Azerbaijan then Leighton will be in his thoughts."
