Paper Talk: Scotland pick Gary

The Wigan Athletic winger was named in the Scotland squad for the first time yesterday and is in line for his debut in the friendly against Wales on Wednesday.

It's the culmination of a remarkable upturn in fortunes for Teale who spent the first part of this season kicking his heels on the substitutes' bench at Latics.

But since being recalled to the starting line-up at the beginning of December, the former Ayr and Clydebank player hasn't looked back.

And that upturn in form has led to Berti Vogts' decision to bring him into the international frame at the age of 25.

Teale is one of four uncapped players in the 23-man squad, along with Ipswich midfielder Tommy Miller, Reading defender Graeme Murty and Blackburn striker Paul Gallagher.

The news of his selection was broken to him by Paul Jewell during training yesterday, and Teale was overjoyed.

He said: "To get international recognition is great and I was delighted when the gaffer told me I was in the squad.

"Everyone wants to play for their country, and while I don't know if I'll be in the team, just being in the squad is tremendous.

"The Millennium Stadium isn't a bad place to start your full international career because nine times out of 10, the place is full when Wales play at home.

"And there will be loads of Scotland supporters there because they always travel in big numbers to games.

"I made my debut for the Under-21s when I was with Cyldebank, a club which doesn't even exist anymore.

"I always hoped that my international career would progress and now it has done with this call-up."

Teale's team-mates Lee McCulloch and Steve McMillan could still join him in Cardiff having been put on stand-by by Vogts in case of injuries and pull-outs over the weekend.

Latics boss Jewell believes Teale is well worthy of the call-up having worked his way back into contention at the JJB Stadium. And firmly tongue in cheek, he tried to take some of the credit for the winger's good news.

Jewell said: "I always knew I was good at my job but I didn't know I was so good I would turn Tealey into an international!

"Joking aside, we are all made up for him and he deserves it on his current form.

"Every signing you make as a manager, you take a gamble, and at times with Tealey it looked like the gamble hadn't paid off.

"I first saw him play a pre-season friendly for Ayr against us when I first came here.

"His pace was very impressive on the day and we scouted him three or four times up in Scotland and decided to take him.

"He has been in and out of the side but is now looking 10 times the player that he was – he's looking more like the player I wanted when I signed him.

"Perhaps I was a bit harsh on him earlier in the season, but he had knuckled down, worked hard and was determined to prove me wrong for not playing him.

"From day one here we have tried to get Gary to simplify his game and told him to utilise his pace as much as he can."

Teale will be on the right side of Latics' midfield tomorrow as relegation-threatened Derby County make their first ever visit to the JJB.

After last week's eye-catching win at Ipswich, Jewell's men need to turn on the style again to maintain a push for promotion.

Jewell said: "A lot of people have commented how impressed they were with our performance last week.

"That is nice but we have to do it again and again, and we need some more big performances if we are going to get into the play-offs or even better.

"We have to do it at home, and while the pitch won't be as good as it was at Ipswich, we have to be able to deal with it.

"If we show the same enthusiasm and endeavour which we did at Ipswich, then we should do well.

"It is up to us to break Derby down, and what we have struggled to do in our last few homes games is get the first goal early on to make teams come at us.

Teams have been happy to come here and spoil the game, and we have to stop that happening."

Jason Jarrett has recovered from a hamstring strain which forced his early exit at Ipswich and will take his place in the centre of midfield tomorrow.

Left-back Leighton Baines took a knock on the ankle in training this week but should be fit to face the Rams.
