Paper Talk: Roy not the boy

The Manchester United star is out of contract in the summer and is stalling on United's offer of a new four-year deal.

It's thought that clubs in the Premiership and abroad are keeping tabs on Carroll, and a national newspaper added Latics to that list of suitors.

But Francis Martin, who handled Carroll's move from Wigan to Old Trafford three-and-a-half years ago, denied the interest.

He told the Evening Post: "Roy, of course, has great memories from when he played for Wigan and it was them who set him on his way to Manchester United.

"I'm sure he hopes they can win promotion to the Premiership this season but there has been no contact from Wigan.

"I don't know whether John Filan has signed his new contract there and perhaps the link has come about that way."

Latics sold Carroll to United in July 2001 for £2.5m – still a club record sale – and he's gone on to make more than 60 first-team appearances, 29 of them this season.

He's been Sir Alex Ferguson's first-choice keeper for a large chunk of this season but has been left out recently after a couple of high profile blunders.

The Northern Ireland international is holding out on signing a new contract because he fears United will sign a new keeper this summer, pushing him down the pecking order.

If he was to leave, he would be available on a Bosman free transfer and has been entitled to speak to other clubs since January 1.

Latics are presently trying to negotiate a two-year contract extension with Filan who was signed as Carroll's successor in December 2001.

His current deal ends in the summer and there has been no official word from the club yet over the progress of those talks.

With one eye on the future, they're also in the market for a young goalkeeper, and recently kept tabs on Cambridge United's John Ruddy, who has since agreed a move to Everton.

In the shorter term, manager Paul Jewell is keen to strengthen the squad before the Football League's transfer deadline later this month and has confirmed his interest in Reading striker Nicky Forster.

No official bid has yet been made but Jewell admitted the 31-year-old is a player he's run the rule over.

Bringing in another striker is high priority to take some of the scoring weight off Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts.
