Paper Talk: Rovers move to snap up Roberts

The club's joint top scorer tore a ligament in his little finger during last week's goalless draw at Watford and went into hospital on Monday night for surgery.

He was advised by the specialist not to play for eight weeks to allow the injury to heal, but Roberts is prepared to take the risk of a swift return to action.

Manager Paul Jewell is relieved that he'll have his record signing back in time for Latics' next game after being hit by injuries to Per Frandsen, Matt Jackson and Gary Teale in the last couple of weeks.

Being without the eight-goal striker would have been a big blow and would have seen the successful partnership between Roberts and Nathan Ellington broken up.

Jewell said: "It's quite a serious injury because Jason had ruptured or snapped the tendon in his little finger.

"The consultant didn't want him to play again for eight weeks, but I think Jason was a bit embarrassed saying he'd be out for that length of time with such an injury!

"So he will be back for the Plymouth game which is pleasing.

"He had the operation on Monday night and he'all have his finger tapped up to protect it being knocked in matches and training.

"Jason doesn't actually know how he did it, but his finger was badly bent and he's needed the operation to strengthen it.

"What we do know is that he did it at Watford and then he played with the injury against Rotherham last Saturday."

In Roberts' case, the fortnight's break in action between games has certainly come at the right time, and he should be firing on all cylinders again by the time Latics make the long trip to Home Park.

Casting his eye over the other players in the club's treatment room, Jewell knows that none of them will be ready for a game for quite a while.

He said: "It's sad to see Per Frandsen on the treatment bench, going through the first stages of his rehabilitation treatment.

"The lad is doing that knowing he will have to undergo another operation on his knee once the swelling has gone down.

"We also have Gary Teale and Matt Jackson in knee braces, while Jason Jarrett is working with the physic every afternoon but he'all be another month at least."
