Paper Talk: Right behind you!

The 2-0 victory over Pompey was their sixth consecutive win in the Premiership and stretched the unbeaten run in the league to nine games.

But Latics face a tough test of their credentials when they resume action a week on Saturday after the international break.

Their home clash with Arsenal is followed by games against Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, while there's a Carling Cup tie with Newcastle thrown in for good measure.

Jewell, though, insists he won't be having sleepless nights ahead of facing the big guns and WON'T be calling on the services of a hypnotist!

It was reported over the weekend that the club had been sending the players for hypnotism to boost their self-confidence.

But in fact the visits have involved only a couple of the squad, one of them striker Jason Roberts, an arrangment they made privately. Jewell said: "She must be good, this woman, because I've never clapped eyes on her!

"Then again, perhaps I've been to see her loads of times and she's made me forget every visit.

"This was another good win and it's the biggest yet because it's the latest one.

"Our test may now be the next five games, but every game is a test and so far we've passed more than we have failed.

"Now we are looking forward to trying to get three points off Arsenal. We know that will be mega-difficult but that is what we are trying to do."

Second half goals from Pascal Chimbonda and Jason Roberts sealed the points at Fratton Park on Saturday evening. The result kept them in second place in the table, and Chelsea's defeat at Manchester United yesterday means Latics trail them by just six points with a game in hand.

Jewell said: "If we are still six points behind them after 38 games I will be delighted.

"At the moment, though, our aim is to take each day as it comes, let alone each game, and try and stay in this league.

"If we can get to 40 points as quickly as possible maybe we will change our thinking, but while we would have been pleased with this points total before the season, nothing has changed.

"I was pleased with how we did at Portsmouth and obviously delighted to have another win under our belts.

"It wasn't the best first half and it took a while for us, and the game itself, to get going.

"Once we scored early in the second half, the game opened up a little bit more and I thought we were excellent.

"We restricted Portsmouth to virtually no chances and played some decent football going forward.

"It was nice to see Pascal scoring again, and he does fancy himself as a bit of a striker in training, wandering up into the box.

"But he's got a good spring, he's great in the air and proved that with the way he got up for the goal.

Friendly

"Pascal is a good player, a great find for us, and we are pleased with how well he is doing for us."

Latics saw five of the squad depart for international duty after the game, three of them in squads for competitive matches and the other two reporting for friendly fixtures.

Josip Skoko has joined up with the Australian squad for their World Cup play-off double header with Uruguay.

Leighton Baines and Ryan Taylor are in the England Under-21 party for the European Championships play-off with France, Baines due to report despite picking up a groin strain at Portsmouth.

Henri Camara is flying with the Senegal team to play a friendly in South Africa.

Lee McCulloch is with the Scotland squad for their game with the United States at Hampden Park on Saturday.
