Paper Talk: Riding high

The Championship leaders ran out 4-1 winners at the JJB Stadium and now have a three-point advantage at the summit.

Ellington: Brace
Lee McCulloch, Nathan Ellington (2) and Jimmy Bullard were on target as Latics stretched their unbeaten run in the league to 14 games.

The delighted Latics boss said: "We were outstanding and I thought we played some fantastic football.

"It was a great performance from front to back, we controlled the game and really got in Crewe's face.

"Crewe had been on a good run of three straight wins, they're a good footballing team, but we more than matched them for that.

"I don't think we can play much better than we did at times last night and it must have been a good game to watch.

"At half-time, my only concern was that we didn't have enough goals to show for our superiority.

"When we got the third goal just into the second half, it should have been game over at that point.

"But we switched off at a throw-in and allowed them to score.

"But in the cold light of day we were pretty comfortable and deserved to score the fourth goal which was a wonderful strike from Jimmy.

"The passing and movement was excellent and it was pleasing that we created a lot of efforts on goal.

"Fourteen games unbeaten is a good start to the season, a great run, and the players deserve credit for that.

"But as soon as you start patting yourself on the back in this game, you can get a shock, so I had a gripe in the dressing room afterwards that we conceded a goal, and that is the measure of us."

McCulloch opened the scoring with an 18th minute header, before Ellington struck either side of half-time.

Former Leigh RMI striker Steve Jones pulled one back for Crewe, but Bullard wrapped up the scoring with a late 30-yard strike – his first goal for 10 months.

Jewell said: "The Duke scored two great goals – he and Jason Roberts are a handful even though Jason isn't 100 per cent at the moment with his hand injury.

"They've both got 10 goals for the season which isn't a bad return.
"Alan Mahon and Jimmy Bullard in the centre of midfield and the two wide lads were excellent."

The one disappointment on the night was that only 7,547 passed through the turnstiles, the lowest turn out at the JJB this term.

Jewell declined to comment on that figure having already aired his views a fortnight ago against Rotherham.

But he did praise for the supporters who generated a decent atmosphere inside the ground.

Jewell said: "I thought the crowd who came were excellent and it does make a difference when you get the response you ask for as far as noise is concerned."

Emerson Thome, McCulloch and Bullard picked up injuries and were having them assessed this morning when the squad reported in for a conditioning and recovery session.
