Paper Talk: Ready, Set, Jo...

The Swedish international midfielder travelled with the Latics' squad to Saturday's 2-0 win at Rotherham United and warmed up with his new team-mates on the Millmoor pitch.

However, the 26-year-old is still trying to regain his fitness having not played a game since he finished the Swedish season with Djurgardens at the end of October.

Manager Paul Jewell is willing to give his £550,000 signing time to adjust to life at the JJB Stadium and has been putting him through rigorous training sessions since joining last week and could throw him into the fray this weekend – if the player can reach full fitness.

Jewell said: "He travelled with us to Rotherham to get into the swing of things but was not involved as he has some hard work ahead of him to get up to speed.

"He will almost have to go through a mini pre-season over the next week and then he may be in our thoughts for the game against Watford.

"We will be fair to him, in terms of allowing him time to adjust to a new country and a new club. But hopefully, if he puts in the hard graft, he will be available sooner rather than later."

The victory in South Yorkshire kept Latics on the tails of Championship leaders Ipswich Town, who they trail by just two points.

And with the Tractor Boys visiting fellow high-fliers Reading at the weekend, the Watford game is a possible route back to the summit.

After three wins in their last three league games, offering the perfect response to their black Christmas – where they failed to pick up a point from a possible nine – Jewell has told his side to get into top gear as the campaign reaches its business end.

He said: "After three defeats in a row around Christmas we have started the new year with back-to-back wins and we must now look to build on that.

"The season starts proper for us now and it is up to us to make sure we make the most of the decent position we have got ourselves into and push on from here.

"There is still a long way to go, we all know that, but I believe we have the players to mount a concerted promotion push, so now it is time for the players to prove my belief in them is well placed."

Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has joined Middlesbrough's teenage frontman Danny Graham and Celtic midfielder Mo Sylla among the potential signings being linked with a move to the JJB Stadium.

The 22-year-old frontman has fallen down the Anfield pecking order after the arrival of Fernando Morientes last week and a move to Latics could offer him a more realistic chance of first-team football.

Jewell revealed last week he had targeted an unnamed player on a permanent move and was waiting for a manager to get back to him, adding fuel to the transfer rumour mill.
