Paper Talk: Pitch battle

While the playing surface didn't stop Latics in their 5-0 rout of Preston on Sunday, the Latics boss was concerned it hindered his side's passing game and doesn't want to see it deteriorate in the winter.

Sections of the grass cut up during the pre-match warm-up despite the derby clash being the first action on it since the goalless draw with Leicester more than a fortnight earlier.

Jewell said: "The pitch wasn't very good on Sunday and the groundsman has got his hands full with it, so we'll have a chat with him over the next couple of days.

"It's not a fast pitch and we can't move the ball quickly on it, and it's something that we need to look at.

"We've had this problem for quite some time.

"The year we got promotion from the Second Division, it was all we ever moaned about so perhaps that's a good omen for us!

"At the moment the pitch doesn't suit us and we have found ourselves having to get the ball forward more quickly than we'd like."

The stadium ground staff have fought a long battle to keep the pitch in top nick, encountering problems since its first season in use.

Earlier this year, chairman Dave Whelan called in a pitch specialist when the winter weather left the playing surface looking threadbare.

A big improvement was quickly seen and the surface has appeared to stay in a good condition until Sunday's clash.

Latics have sole use of the pitch until the second week in February when Warriors return to action.

Even then, the clubs' fixture lists are such that neither are at home on the same weekend – saving it from over-use.

On the playing front, Tony Dinning's eventful three-year stay with Latics is at an end after he completed a free transfer to move to Bristol City.

The midfielder has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the League One side following a successful six-game loan spell.

Dinning was a club record signing when he joined Latics from Wolves in September 2001 for £750,000, going on to make 78 league starts in which he scored 12 goals – including their last goal in Division Two.

But his time at the JJB was punctuated by five loan moves to Stoke, Walsall, Blackpool, Ipswich and most recently Bristol City.

He would have been out of contract in the summer and is believed to have reached a settlement with Latics over the final seven months of his deal.

The former Newcastle United trainee is in City's squad for tonight's clash with Doncaster and is pleased that the move has gone through.

He said: "It is great everything is done and now I can concentrate on my football.

"The loan spell went really well and I have been totally geared up for coming here permanently."
