Paper Talk: Now or never in Premiership quest

Last updated : 28 January 2005 By Wigan Evening Post.
With a little more than three months of the season left, the promotion chasers are second in the table, a point ahead of Sunderland and seven clear of fourth placed Reading.

They have been out of the top two only once this term and Jewell believes Latics have enough in their locker to keep the upward momentum going.

Seven of the current top-11 sides still have to visit the JJB Stadium, and on paper at least, the chance of glory is in their own hands.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "I believe we won't have a better chance of promotion because with 16 games left, we are second in the table with a seven-point lead over fourth place.

"You don't get better chance than that and I've told the players 'when we're old and decrepit, let's not look back at 2004/05 and say we didn't fulfil what we should have'.

"If we don't go up, let it be because we weren't good enough, but I believe we are good enough.

"This should be a fantastic time to be a Wigan fan, a Wigan player and the Wigan manager, so let's make the most if it.

"It would be momentous if we got up, and while I got Bradford promoted, going up with Wigan would be my biggest achievement in football.

"To do it here with the stigma attached to the club – the fact people say we're a rugby town and with the talk about the small gates – would give me more pleasure than anything.

Hunger

"The hunger is there for myself and the players, and hopefully the disappointment of last season will stand us in better stead this time.

"I'm desperate to get into the Premiership, I want to be a Premiership manager because it's the best place to be in football.

"I'm ambitious, I hope the players are just as ambitious, and if we didn't go up, it wouldn't be because of a lack of preparation or a lack of drive or a lack of trying to strengthen the squad.

"What we've got to do is keep focusing on winning matches as that is what will get promotion, not dreaming about it."

Jewell, though, is in no way counting his chickens when it comes to promotion talk.

He is still looking to bolster the size and quality of the squad, and has confirmed Stoke striker Ade Akinbiyi is a target.

But a bid has yet to go in as he weighs up whether to make his move official or look elsewhere.

Jewell said: "Akinbiyi is a name which has been mentioned – not by us – but he is one of the players we are interested in.

"There are actually three or four strikers we are looking at, while we're also looking to strengthen throughout the team.

"As for Akinbiyi, I've spoken to (Stoke boss) Tony Pulis about it and I'm mulling over whether to make an offer for him.

"I know there are other clubs interested as he's a decent player who is full of hard work."

Championship rivals Sheffield United have had a bid knocked back by Stoke for Akinibiyi who still has 18 months left on his contract.
