Paper Talk: No mercy for Wimbledon

The troubled Dons come to the JJB Stadium on Saturday knowing anything less than a victory is likely to send them down to the Second Division.

Even if they were to pull off a shock victory, it would only be delaying the inevitable with them 15 points adrift at the foot of the table.

But the Latics manager doesn't want to entertain such a scenario and is demanding his side show a ruthless streak to further their play-off credentials.

Jewell said: "The beauty of football is that anything can happen. Remember, Wimbledon won at West Brom earlier in the season and who would have predicted that?

"Obviously they are struggling but that could work in their favour in some ways.

"They have a lot of young players with no pressure on them, so all the pressure will be on us. We have to make sure we approach the game in a professional manner and do our job."

Jewell takes no pleasure from seeing Wimbledon in the state they are, and sympathises greatly with opposite number Stuart Murdoch.

And he believes their plight should serve as a warning when it comes to running a club.

Jewell said: "It's sad to see when you think they won the FA Cup in 1988 and were in the Premiership until 2000. They are now plummeting towards the Second Division with a different ground and different supporters.

"It shows that in this game, you have to keep striving forward, never to rest on your laurels and not to take things for granted.

"I feel sorry for Stuart Murdoch, he's a really decent guy, although I hope I feel even sorrier for him after Saturday."

Jewell will be forced into a goalkeeping reshuffle, with John Filan suspended following his red card at West Brom a fortnight ago.

Gary Walsh takes the gloves with untried youngster James Salisbury probably on the bench.

Salisbury is on loan at neighbours Leigh RMI until Friday, but is free to take up his place on the bench for Latics the next day.

This will be his first involvement in the first team squad since signing for the club last summer from Burnley.

He has shared the keeping duties in the reserves this season with Ryan Yeomans, and has caught the eye of the coaching staff.

Jewell said: "I'll probably put James on the bench.

"He has been playing there to get some experience and that will have done him good.

"As for Gary Walsh, he's a very able deputy for John Filan. While we have one experienced keeper out, we have one vastly experienced keeper to come in."
