Paper Talk: New boys settling in

Per Frandsen, David Graham and David Wright have caught the manager's eye during their first week of pre-season training with the club.

And they will pull on a Latics shirt for the first time next week when the squad head to Holland for a six-day training camp – a stay which includes friendlies against Belgium sides Verbroedering Geel and Patro Maasmechelen.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "The new lads have settled in well to training but obviously you can make a better judgement when you've seen them playing.

"Per Frandsen says this is the fittest group of players he has ever worked with and that is great credit to the rest of the lads here.

"David Wright and David Graham are enjoying the challenge here and that is great to see.

"We've been doing a lot of fitness work up until now but when we go over to Holland, we'll turn our attention to how we want to play.

"Our system is not a complicated one so the new lads should pick it up pretty quickly.

"But we've got to bear in mind that this is a new situation for them, listening to different voices and ideas.

"David Wright for example has only previously worked under Dario Gradi at Crewe, and Dario and myself both have different methods.

"Per and David Graham have had other managers but again have to get used to my way of working."

Priority

Jewell is still keen to make his trio of signings into a quartet with a centre-half the No.1 priority on his wanted list.

Hungarian international Adam Komlosi will continue his trial with the squad in Holland after making a good impression over the last few days.

Jewell said: "It's not exactly a trial for the lad because he's out of contract with his club in Budapest and is spending some time with us.

"He's coming away to Holland so we can continue having a look at him and assess the situation after that.

"When international players are prepared to come over you don't lose anything by having a look at them.

"We've worked him very hard and I bet he's sleeping well at night!"

* Latics face a trip to Cleethorpes next month after being drawn away to Grimsby Town in the first round of the Carling Cup.

The clash against the League Two side at Blundell Park will take place during the week beginning August 23.
