Paper Talk: McMillan ready to sign deal

The full-back was offered a new two-year contract last month and it's believed terms have been agreed with the club.

Until April, McMillan's time at Latics looked to be coming to an end due to a distinct lack of first-team action.

A succession of injuries had hampered him and once he got fit, Leighton Baines had taken root in the left-back slot.

But following back-to-back defeats at home to West Ham and Sunderland, manager Paul Jewell shook up the team with a handful of changes.

McMillan was recalled for the game at Cardiff on April 9 – his first league start in more than a year – and he kept his place through to the end of the
campaign.

Jewell is a big fan of the former Motherwell defender and was keen to tie him to a new deal before his current contract runs out at the end of this month.

And providing he does put pen to paper, the manager will be looking for McMillan to play a key role next season – possibly starting as the first choice left-back.

Jewell said: "Injuries have hit Steve's career, but hopefully he's left them behind.

"He can play at the top level, I'm certain of that, so I'd like to think he'll accept our offer."

McMillan joined Latics in February 2001 from Motherwell along with Lee McCulloch, but has been limited to 81 league starts in that time.

Elsewhere on the contract front, I understand Gary Teale is due to hold talks with club officials next week.

Like McMillan, the winger has been offered a two-year deal, with Jewell seeing a role for him in the Premiership.

Jason Jarrett is still weighing up whether to accept a three-year contract, with Norwich City also keen to take him.

It might be that the midfielder turns his back on the chance of Premiership football for more first-team action with the Canaries.

Gary Walsh is thought to have accepted the club's offer of a 12-month extension which will include goalkeeping coaching duties.

While keen to get the out-of-contract players sorted out, Jewell has still been able to give his attention to the transfer market.

So far, though, his efforts have yet to yield fruit, most of the players linked with Latics being dismissed as speculation by the manager.

This week there was talk of a big money move for striker Leon McKenzie at Norwich but it now appears that one won't come off.

Meanwhile, Latics have announced slight changes to their pre-season friendly programme following the announcement they will be playing Boavista at the JJB on August 6.

They were due to play at Accrington Stanley that afternoon, but the trip to East Lancashire will now be on Wednesday, August 3, in place of the away game at Southport which has been cancelled.

Wait and see for Jarrett

Wigan Athletic midfielder Jason Jarrett still doesn't know where he will be playing his football next season.

The 25-year-old is in the final three weeks of his contract and has yet to strike a new deal with the Premiership newcomers. Norwich City are keen to take him to Carrow Road, while there has been interest from other clubs too.

But for the moment it's a case of wait and see, although Jarrett wants something sorted out before the start of pre-season training next month.

He told the Evening Post: "My agent is still talking with Wigan, they've had a couple of meetings and, fingers crossed, something can be done quite soon.

"There are other clubs who have been in contact with me, I'm a free agent soon so I can speak to them to see what is available. I'm out of contract here on July 1 and that's when we start pre-season training, so ideally that is when I would like all this to be settled.

"These things aren't as simple as people might think and it can take a bit of time to reach an agreement. The club wants the best deal it can and so do I."

Jarrett will have several things to weigh up as he considers his future, and it might be he has to turn his back on the Premiership for regular first-team football.

While Latics are obviously keen to keep him by offering him a new three-year contract, the chances are he might only be a squad player.

He has competition from Graham Kavanagh, Jimmy Bullard and Andreas Johansson for a central midfielder berth, with the club also looking to strengthen that department this summer.

So Jarrett might be tempted by Norwich's approach, a move to Norfolk reuniting him with Nigel Worthington.

He was an apprentice at Blackpool when Worthington was Seasiders manager, playing twice in the first team.

Worthington is targeting a midfielder with a physical presence during the close season in readiness for the likely departure of Damien Francis, who has attracted interest from Fulham and Charlton.

While Jarrett waits for his agent to complete negotiations, he's planning a short holiday and is also busy keeping himself in trim for the return to training.

He said: "I'm hoping to get away next week to Spain, and while I'm at home it's been a case of getting some rest and doing some light work.

"It's no point pushing yourself at this stage and peaking too soon, it's a case of building up the work ready for July."

There's still been no word from the other two outfield players who have been offered new deals by Latics.

Steve McMillan and Gary Teale are thinking over two-year contracts, andare also believed to be interesting other clubs. Goalkeeper Gary Walsh has agreed a 12-month extension and is expected to put pen to paper next month.
