Paper Talk: Leading Men

Last updated : 25 February 2005 By Paul Farrington
A 2-1 win at Coventry City sent them leapfrogging above Ipswich on goal
difference – the first time they have been on top since December 21.

Goals from Gary Teale and Nathan Ellington gave Latics victory at snowy Highfield Road.

Jewell said: "There's no real pressure being top, it's at the bottom where the pressure is.

"It feels nice to be top now but what we want is to be top on May 8 when the points are counted up for the last time.

Twists

"Just 10 days ago, Ipswich had a five-point lead over us so we know there are going to be more twists and turns before the end of the season.

"It's important we keep our focus over the final 12 games and forget the Premiership.

"Our focus now is going to Gillingham on Saturday and trying for another three points."

Jewell was full of praise for top scorer Ellington who hit his 20th goal of the season with some style last night.

He scored for the third match running by lashing home Latics' 68th-minute
winner with a right-foot volley.

Jewell said: "The Duke scored a fantastic goal which was worthy of winning any game. It was a goal out of nothing and we all know that he has the ability to do that.

"I thought he played well, won plenty of headers, and it's great when goals like that fly in.

"We will be talking about the goal for some time, but I also think John Filan deserves a lot of praise.

"John made an unbelievable double save in the first half, and he took pressure off the back four by collecting crosses and displaying a lot of calm.

"The back four weren't as good as they have been – I thought they looked a bit wobbly.

"But John helped them through the game and he played really well."

Teale had given Latics a 10th-minute lead before Gary McSheffrey levelled with a penalty 11 minutes later – a decision Jewell described as "harsh".

It was then left to Ellington to take centre stage with his winning strike and in doing so he became only the fourth Wigan player to score 20 league goals in a season.

Jewell said: "It was a bit of a strange game.

"We got the early goal and were in control, but then the game became very stop-start.

"Lee McCulloch had to go off to have a cut on his head stitched and the doctor kept him in the dressing room for what seemed like ages.

"They had a couple of injuries and neither side could really get going.

"I thought the penalty was harsh – when I heard the whistle I thought the referee was blowing up to book their lad for diving.

"At half-time I pointed out to the lads they had been sucked into a lull.

"It was a decent pitch and a great night to play football and I said we were playing for big stakes here.

"The effort was there but I wanted more from them, and I think we played a bit better in the second half.

"We had some good possession and it was just a case of trying to find a second goal – in the end the Duke got it out of nothing.

"It was great that we got the win for the supporters because we had a terrific following from Wigan.

"They travelled down in difficult weather conditions and got right behind us."

Latics stayed in Coventry afterwards and were training there this morning before moving to Gillingham this afternoon ahead of Saturday's match.
