Paper Talk: Latics to play without fear

He doesn't want them overawed by the Premiership even though they will start the campaign among the relegation favourites – a tag bestowed on all promoted sides.

And the manager will use Latics' recent record against top-flight teams to show they can hack it with the big boys.

Jewell said: "I don't want us to be the Cinderellas or whipping boys of the division.

"The word fear won't come into our vocabulary and that is something I'll be telling the players when they come back.

"It won't be a case of going to Old Trafford or Anfield and spending the first 10 minutes thinking 'this is nice'.

"If that happens, the game will be over in no time.

"We have to go to places like that and almost show the opposition no respect – it doesn't matter who we're playing.

"If the ball is there to be won, it doesn't matter whether you're up against an international player, it has to be won.

"We know it is going to be difficult, every game will be a seriously tough test, but that is why I came here four years ago and why the players have worked so hard in that time.

"Wigan are in the Premiership on merit, we have as much right as anyone to be in this league and have earned that right along with Sunderland and West Ham.

"If the game was played on paper, we might as well stay at home and go down now.

"But it's played on grass and a lot of factors come into it."

Looking back over past encounters with Premiership sides in cup matches offers Jewell much encouragement.

So too does some of the results he picked up while managing Bradford during their first season in the Premiership.

He said: "Since I came to Wigan, we have beaten Manchester City, Fulham and West Brom.We were beaten by Blackburn and Middlesbrough but weren't disgraced in those games, and a record of won three, lost two isn't bad.

"I'm not saying that is going to be the way next season as the games I referred to were all one-off cup ties.

"But I'm confident we can handle it, and the side at the start of the season will be better than last year's team.

"I also look at that season I had with Bradford when we beat Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool at home.

"No one gave us a prayer in those games but we won them, so it can be done."

On the transfer front, talks are continuing over a deal to bring Rotherham goalkeeper Mike Pollitt to the JJB.

Latics approached the Millers late last week over the availability of Pollitt who has 12 months left on his contract.

A fee of around £250,000 has been agreed and the transfer now hinges on talks with the 33-year-old's agent.
