Paper Talk: Latics to grow off the pitch

It will always certainly mean another face on the coaching side, more scouts and perhaps an additional member of staff to handle contract and transfer negotiations.

Jewell was due to discuss the topic with chairman Dave Whelan during the club's trip to Barbados and wants the additions in place quickly.

He told the Evening Post: "We need to make additions to our staff to be better.

"The club is growing, we have to think bigger in the big league but without being silly.

"We have to spread the net wider on the scouting side and might have to change things on the coaching front.

"Now we are in the Premiership, things like negotiating contracts will take up a lot of my time.

"If we can, we might get someone on board to deal with those situations and take the pressure away from me.

"But I will always be the one who chooses to sign a player or offer a new contract.

"The best part of my job and the most important is being out on the training pitch with the squad, trying to make us better."

At the moment, Jewell runs the first team with assistant Chris Hutchings and coach David Lowe – who also looks after the reserves. David Lee is in charge of the youth set-up while David Hamilton organises the scouting.

On the playing side, Jewell is busy working on his retained list which has to be registered later this week.

Jason Jarrett, Steve McMillan and Gary Teale are the big names coming out of contract, as are Gareth Whalley, Paul Mitchell and young keeper James Salisbury.

Jewell has hinted some will be offered new deals, while contract talks will also start with Nathan Ellington and Jimmy Bullard who have a year to run on their current deals.

He said: "It's important I talk with the players involved first before releasing details.

"The lads whose contracts are up have had a bit of an uncertain time but their attitude and performances in training have been outstanding.

"No one has been sulking, they have got on with trying to impress me and show they deserve a new contract.

"Look at Jason Jarrett. He was out for a lot of the season with a bad injury but came back for the last few games, and against Reading he had his best ever game for Wigan.

"Hopefully the lads we are going to offer contracts to will accept, and those who we don't shouldn't have problems getting fixed up elsewhere.

"As for the rest of the players, we have most of them tied up for a while."

Scotland call for hero Lee

Lee McCulloch's season is going into extra-time after he was called up to the Scotland squad for two games next month.

The Wigan Athletic midfielder has been picked by Walter Smith for the World Cup qualifying games against Moldova and Belraus.

It means he has to miss out on Latics' club holiday to Barbados but will get a short break in the sun with his family before joining the Scottish party.

Scotland play Moldova at Hampden Park on Saturday, June 4 before flying out to Minsk to tackle Belarus four days later.

McCulloch told the Evening Post: "I got the letter from the Scottish FA yesterday morning and I'm really looking forward to being involved again.

"I now won't be going to Barbados with the rest of the lads because they only get back next weekend and I have to join up for training with Scotland on Monday.

"It would be difficult to come back from a holiday like that and get straight down to training.

"Instead I'm going away to Portugal for a short break with my family and little boy, so at least I get a holiday.

"I'll be keeping my general fitness levels up in the gym and playing a few rounds of golf when I'm there.

"I had a word with the gaffer about it and he's been absolutely great with me.

"Joining up with Scotland will cap off a great season very nicely and hopefully I can feature at some stage in the matches."

McCulloch has two senior international caps to his name at the moment, appearing as a late substitute in Moldova last October and then playing the full game against Italy at the San Siro Stadium in March.

With Manchester United's Darren Fletcher back in the squad this time, he has competition for his starting slot.

But with Scotland coach Smith building for the future, McCulloch should get a run-out at some stage.

The extension to his season means the midfielder will get little time to recharge the batteries this summer.

Once his national service is done, he'll have only three weeks before reporting back for pre-season training with Latics – the build-up to the Premiership starts in the final week of June.

The majority of the Latics squad, coaching staff and backroom team flew out to Barbados this morning for their jaunt in the sun.

Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts were absentees due to injury – the Duke underwent surgery on his shoulder earlier in the week while Roberts is on crutches after fracturing his left fibula in the Reading game.

Manager Paul Jewell will discuss an extension to his contract with Dave Whelan while they are out there.

And talks will also take place between the pair about who they will target in the transfer market this summer.

Meanwhile, Latics have revealed they won't be playing any friendly matches during their visit to Denmark in July.

The trip, starting on July 15, will be a training camp only and the club don't want supporters, thinking of travelling, to have a wasted journey.

Jewell is currently putting the final touches to the pre-season schedule which may include games against Macclesfield, Morecambe and Huddersfield.
