Paper Talk: Latics star to lead the line

While McCulloch helped Latics to the Premiership from the left side of midfield, he's expected to be handed a centre-forward role against Belarus in Minsk tonight.

He played up front at the weekend as the Scots beat Moldova 2-0 at Hampden Park, setting up the first goal.

And the 27-year-old did enough to convince coach Walter Smith to hand him a fourth international cap this evening.

McCulloch says this spell of national service has nicely rounded off a hugely successful season which saw Latics climb into the top flight.

Speaking to the Evening Post from Minsk, he said: "Being picked to represent your country is an honour and playing at Hampden Park last Saturday was fantastic.

"My family and friends were there, and although I played at the stadium for Motherwell against Queen's Park a few years ago, it was nothing like the experience of an international game.

"Playing for Scotland has capped off a very good season for myself and hopefully playing at international level can help put Wigan on the map.

"I'm hoping to play again tonight although it's down to the coach as to whether I'm selected."

McCulloch and his Scotland team-mates have been in Minsk since Monday, and he's so far enjoyed the visit to the former Soviet republic.

He said: "It's quite good here although we didn't have any hot water in the hotel yesterday which wasn't the best.

"We trained on Monday night and twice yesterday, so we should be well prepared for the game.

"It's a very professional set-up and two chefs from the Loch Lomond Hotel we used before the Moldova game have travelled with us.

"They're cooking all our food to make sure we don't go down with anything.
