Paper Talk: Latics plans hit by injuries

Manager Paul Jewell has revealed Saturday's win over Leeds came at a cost.

He was keeping his counsel as to their identities although strikers Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington are thought to be two players warming the treatment couch.

Both were substituted in the closing minutes of the Leeds game with Roberts limping off with a groin strain while the Duke has been troubled recently by a tight hamstring.

But there was no clue of the other casualty and it won't be until the teamsheet is printed at Highfield Road that the picture may become clearer.

Jewell was today exploring the transfer market to try to draft in cover in time for Coventry and the trip to Gillingham on Saturday.

He has confirmed Brett Ormerod remains a target despite failing to sign him in a recent bid.

Jewell said: "We've three injuries for the Coventry game, two of them are doubtful while the other is struggling.

"But I have a good squad and I've told the lads if they get the call, they have to be ready for it and show what they are about.

"We're also looking at the transfer market and something might happen before tomorrow, we'll have to see.

"I'm sure the supporters get fed up of me saying there is a chance of a new signing and then nothing happens.

"I am actively trying to bring in certainly one player, if not two."

Jewell has been trying to land Ormerod for the best part of a month but have so far been stalled by a striker shortage at Southampton.

But now Kevin Phillips has recovered from injury, it has again left Ormerod surplus to requirements.

Jewell said: "I don't know what Harry Redknapp is thinking now but Ormerod is one we might pursue to give us another body.

"We don't have the biggest squad in the world and that is down to me so I won't go around crying about it.

"But we have three doubts for tomorrow and it is important we have decent replacements if necessary."

Meanwhile, Latics will cut down on their travelling this week by not returning to Wigan after tomorrow's game.

They are staying in Coventry overnight before heading to Kent on Thursday morning for the clash with Gillingham.

Jewell said: "If we came home after playing Coventry, it would be late when we got back, and then we would have to set out for Gillingham on Friday morning.

"So we have decided to take the players away from tomorrow onwards so we can get as much rest as possible.

"We've got training facilities organised and hopefully we'll feel the benefit."
