Paper Talk: Latics clinch Wright signing

The 24-year-old Crewe defender is Paul Jewell's third signing of the summer, joining Bolton midfielder Per Frandsen and Torquay striker David Graham at the JJB Stadium.

Wright will meet up with his new team-mates on Thursday when the Latics squad return for pre-season training.

And after passing his medical and putting pen to paper on a three-year contract, he was already dreaming of playing Premiership football within 12 months.

"Wigan were desperately unlucky to miss out on the play-offs last year and hopefully I can help us go that one step further come May," he said.

"Certainly I see this as a club that is going places.

"I'm the third signing of the summer. And, if you add those to the squad that is already here, I really think we can push for promotion again this season.

"Like everyone else, I want to play at the very top level and hopefully the move to Wigan will help me achieve that dream."

Wright has been playing full-back at Crewe, but he is versatile enough to play in the heart of the defence.

Jewell is delighted to finally land a player he has admired for some time – at one point last week it looked as if the deal was dead in the water, but face-to-face talks on Friday did the trick.

"It has taken a little time to complete," said Wright.

"But once I knew Wigan were definitely interested and Crewe had accepted a bid, it wasn't a difficult decision to make.

"I had a great time at Crewe, but I feel that the time is right to move on and I'm very excited to sign here at the JJB.

"It is the first move of my career and that makes it even more exciting as it should give my career fresh impetus.

"You need a change sometimes and that is why I feel the time is right for a move.

"I've been impressed with the manager and when you are made to feel that he really wants to bring you in it does make you want to sign.

"The Premiership has to be our aim and, after the excellent way that the club adjusted to promotion last season, hopefully I can play a part as build on that success by finishing even higher this time around.

"It will be tough though because there are some big teams in this league and that may make it even more competitive than last season.

"But I'm looking forward to the challenge as we all will do. I'm really looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the lads on Thursday."

Wright said his goodbyes at Gresty Road yesterday morning before travelling to Wigan to complete the formalities.

His departure brings to an end a 15-year stay at the club - he first joined as a nine-year-old on schoolboy forms.

In the last seven seasons in the first team squad, he has played 239 games for the Alex.
