Paper Talk: Kavanagh on the way

The central midfielder has nine Republic of Ireland caps to his name and has been a regular thorn in Latics' side over the years while starring for Cardiff and before that Stoke City.

His signing was hinted at by Latics manager Paul Jewell on a live radio broadcast from the JJB Stadium last night.

Jewell revealed: "I've had a busy day but it looks as though we have agreed fees with two clubs for a couple of players.

"Obviously, there is still work to do and therefore it's not fair to name names at this stage.

"However, I'm pretty confident both deals will go through.

"With a bit of luck, the first will be completed tomorrow morning, while the other should be wrapped up early next week. It's great news if we can get these deals done as we know we need to strengthen and I feel these players will be good additions."

The other player is believed to be Reading striker Nicky Forster, as suggested in the Evening Post on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, both Ipswich Town and a flu virus stand in the way of Latics' promotion roll tomorrow.

Half-a-dozen of the squad have now been hit by the bug sweeping through the dressing room, leaving manager Paul Jewell with a selection headache for the club's biggest game of the season to date.

Only 10 players trained yesterday due to the illness and the fact some had played for the reserves on Wednesday.

But Jewell still remains confident the side he puts out against the Tractor Boys won't be far off full strength.

Alan Mahon, Jimmy Bullard, Jason Roberts and Gary Teale were the first players to fall ill at the start of the week.

Two more – who Jewell declined to identify – have since joined the sick list, and he was conducting a head count before training today to see who was available.

Mahon was encouragingly back at the training ground yesterday, the midfielder also walking more freely after being sidelined by a knee injury.

Jewell said: "We had 10 training yesterday, a few of the lads are struggling with this flu bug, so we'll have to assess the situation.

"It's not ideal but I'm sure come tomorrow we will be able to put a decent team out and we aren't going to use this as an excuse.

"Hopefully we'll have more on the pitch than not and while this is something we could have done without, Ipswich could have done without Jason de Vos and James Scowcroft being suspended.

"Whatever sides are put out tomorrow, it should be a great game and both set of fans will be looking forward to it."

Jewell is reluctant to describe the clash as a six-pointer as there still being 10 games to go after tomorrow.

But with Latics, Ipswich and Sunderland all locked on 66 points – at least until tonight when Sunderland play Burnley – he knows victory would be a big step forward in the promotion race.

Both of tomorrow's protagonists sides will be looking to bounce back from defeats last Saturday – Latics at Gillingham and Ipswich at home to Queens Park Rangers.

That was the Suffolk club's second reverse on the spin but something Jewell isn't attaching much significance to it.

He said: "Both those defeats were at home where they're normally very strong, but that happens in football.

"Very rarely do you go through a season without a blip, it happens to the very best as Chelsea will tell you.

"What counts is how many points you get on the board and which position you finish in at the end of the season.

"Ipswich are a good side and have used getting into the play-offs last season as a springboard for a promotion push this time.

"They've some excellent young players who have come through their academy, added people like de Vos and Shefki Kuqi, while Richard Naylor, Fabian Wilnis, Jim Magilton, Kevin Horlock and Tommy Miller all have Premiership experience.

"Joe Royle has done an excellent job but he's brilliant at telling you he has no money to spend, nearly as good as Kevin Blackwell at Leeds!"

Latics are expecting a crowd in the region of 15,000 with Ipswich backed by a 2,500-strong following.

The club are keen to stress there will be no charge for using the car parks around the stadium as had previously been suggested.
