Paper Talk: Jewell's gratitude to Whelan

Last updated : 27 April 2004 By Paul Farrington
The manager has developed a good working relationship with Whelan and is grateful for the backing he has been given since arriving at the club nearly three years ago.

With one promotion already in the bag, Jewell is targeting a second with Latics currently occupying sixth place with two games to go.

Six points from those clashes with Nottingham Forest and West Ham would guarantee a play-off slot, while a win and draw would almost certainly be enough.

Jewell said: "The chairman is very proud of this club and rightly so. It's a dream I would love to see achieved because he has put a lot of money into the venture.

"He's not in it for the money because he doesn't make anything out of Wigan Athletic.

"In my time here, he has let me get on with the job and that is the only thing a manager can ask for.

"He has given me the tools, given me money to spend when I want it, and has backed me all the way.

"Deep down, I think the chairman would admit that in the past he has chopped and changed managers a bit too early. But with me he doesn't interfere and rarely knows the team in advance of a game.

"He knows the game because he was a player himself.

"I have sent him to watch players at times and I don't feel embarrassed having done that – mind you, he wasn't happy being sent to Northampton and Carlisle.

"At the end of the day, it's his money.

"He went to watch two players who we ended up signing.

"He wasn't that sure about them, but I convinced him they were what we needed and he backed my judgment.

"To be honest, we're never a million miles away over things.

"We are similar in the fact we like people to work hard and like honesty.

"He doesn't interfere. If he did, he didn't think I could do the job."

With a play-off place in their own hands, Jewell believes Latics' position is even beyond Whelan's pre-season expectations.

He said: "The players' bonuses are geared for the top six because he never thought they would get there.

"Seriously, though, I spoke to him last summer and we decided to see what the division was all about.

"I didn't want to spend money I didn't need to, and the players I wanted weren't available at the time.

"I think he said to me if we finish in the top half, we will have done marvellously. We have done better than that and now we want to finish the job."

If Latics were to book their top finish and then climb into the Premiership through the play-offs, Jewell can expect sizeable funds from Whelan for strengthening the squad.

The chairman has gone on record to say he will release the television money promoted clubs get, and also match that amount from his own pocket.

* Latics Reserves clinched the Pontins League Division One West title last night when they beat Shrewsbury 3-2 at Gay Meadow.

Two goals from David Moore and a late strike from Joey Roberts handed them the three points they needed to wrap up the championship and earn promotion to the Premier Division.
