Paper Talk: Jewell warns 'keep cool'

Last updated : 22 April 2004 By Paul Farrington
The manager is already without two key players through suspension for matches next month and doesn't want anyone else hit by a ban.

Jason Roberts and Jason Jarrett were both red-carded at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Record signing Roberts will miss the games with Nottingham Forest (May 1) and West Ham (May 9) as a result, while Jarrett is out of the Forest clash.

Their dismissals took Latics' red card count up to 11 for the season, one of the highest in Division One.

And while manager Jewell thinks some of those have been unjust, others, he says, have been down to silliness by his players. He said: "Apart from Jacko's at West Ham, I don't think there has been a physio on the pitch for the sendings-off we've had.

"We have to look at ourselves and think we're a little bit petty at times.

"We're picking up silly red cards for two bookings and petulance which we have to cut out. That is not what we're all about.

"We've not really got a tackler in our team, there is no one you could call a nasty so-and-so.

"So we can't just keep blaming referees – some of them have been ludicrous refereeing decision – but some have been brought on by ourselves."

If anyone was to pick up a red card on Saturday against Sunderland, they would miss West Ham's visit a week on Sunday and possibly put their involvement in the play-offs as risk were Latics to claim a top-six finish.

Jewell had mixed feelings about the red cards dished out to Roberts and Jarrett by referee Mike Thorpe at Crystal Palace.

Both went in stoppage time for their second booking of the afternoon.

"I've no argument with Jason Jarrett's sending-off for two bookings," admitted Jewell.

"But some of the tackles the referee let go in the first half from their players were more than bookable.

"In the second half Lee McCulloch got stamped on and ended up being booked.

"I still don't believe the referee has seen whatever went on with Jason Roberts.

"Jason shouldn't have got himself in that situation and should have had enough experience to walk away from whatever was going on.

"But I went to see the referee after the game and asked him why he went to the linesman who hadn't flagged.

"The linesman said he didn't see anything, the referee said he did see something, but to be honest, I don't believe him.

"I've put my report in for what that is worth, and I just thought the referee was swayed by the crowd.

"I've said he was a homer and I don't think he was up to the task."
