Paper Talk: Jewell threatens to ring the changes

Jewell said: "For the first time since we lost 1-0 to Charlton at The Valley in
August, we didn't look like a solid unit, and maybe freshening things up a bit is something I've got to look at.

"To win a game in the Premiership, we've got to be 100 per cent physically and mentally, and that takes its toll.

"We are in the middle of an incredibly hard sequence of fixtures, and maybe one or two could benefit from a rest.

"It's not something I like to do, but maybe the time has come for me to do it.

"Obviously I can't go changing it willy-nilly, but I think it might be time.

"Other Premiership bosses tell me that a lot of their players are almost shot by January and that's a concern."

Despite losing their previous three Premiership starts to Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool, Latics are still riding high in seventh place, having clocked up 25 points from 14 games.

However, Jewell still looks certain to beef up his squad when the transfer window opens again next month.

He said: "People are saying Manchester City are doing well, but we are ahead of them by a point and our current tally is a good one for a team in their first season in the top league.

"Our next two games are against Chelsea and Manchester United, and that would be an incredibly hard test for any team in Europe.

"I hate losing, of course, and I had a rubbish weekend after the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.

"But we also have to accept we are new to this league and it could be a tough winter.

"We've just got to make sure that our heads don't go down and don't believe any negative things that might be said.

"But there are no negatives for me because we are ahead of some teams who have been established in the top flight for many decades."

Jewell hopes skipper Arjan de Zeeuw will be available for the trip to the capital.

De Zeeuw was due to undergo a scan on his injured knee today which forced him out of action 10 minutes before half-time at Liverpool.

Jewell added: "It is all down to what the doctor says in the next 24 hours.

Arry has been a massive influence for us this season, but Matt Jackson is a very able replacement who'll never let you down."

Latics will face Bolton Wanderers in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup at the JJB on Tuesday, December 20, while the FA Cup third round tie against Leeds United will be staged on January 7.

Latics have 3,000 tickets for the game at West Ham United at Upton Park on Wednesday, December 28 (7.45pm).

Corporate and blue chip season ticket holders can buy them from tomorrow (adults £30, conc £15).
