Paper Talk: Jewell set to ring changes

But while Jewell admits he and his players would 'love to win it', he insists that the Premiership remains his priority.

And to that end, Jewell hinted he will again introduce several changes to the side that lost at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Jewell said: "It's important that the players on the fringes get a chance.

"We would obviously love to win it (the Carling Cup) and it's our next game so it's the priority for now.

"But nothing can get in the way of the Premiership.

"Staying in the league is all we're concerned about."

Jewell and his team needed the luxury of extra-time to beat off Watford's meaty challenge in the last round, a Ryan Taylor penalty and Andreas Johansson with two seeing off the southerners.

And whatever team he picks, Jewell expects another tough encounter tomorrow as Premiership opposition crosses his side's path for the first time in this year's competition.

Jewell believes Newcastle will be all fired up as they may well regard the Carling Cup as their most realistic passport into Europe next season.

He added: "This is a big game for Newcastle.

"They will definitely be looking to win because it could be their best chance for a place in Europe."

Jewell is also looking for an definite upturn in the quality of football on display after his side lost for the second time in a row to Spurs following a star-spangled start to the season. He added: "I don't think anyone can put our work-rate in doubt, but more quality is what we need.

"But this is not a time to be feeling down.

"We only dropped into fourth place after losing to Spurs – that's not the end of the world."

Fans can pay at the turnstiles tomorrow with all tickets costing £15.

Latics have already sold 10,000 seats and fans can still take advantage of the early bird scheme today by pre-purchasing places at £12 adults, £7 OAPS and £5 for the Under-16s.
