Paper Talk: Jewell plans home shopping

But he hasn't ruled out trawling the talent net on the Continent, especially if prices at home are too high.

Jewell has also urged supporters to be patient as they await news of new signings.

The rumour mill is already in full swing, with Latics linked with a long list of
possible targets including Everton pair Steve Watson and Alan Stubbs, and Michael Brown of Spurs.

It could be next month, though, before the dealing starts to bear fruit, and it might take until the close of the transfer window at the end of August before everyone is in.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "I would like to buy British if possible and that's not because I'm anti-foreign or anything like that. If I managed in Spain I would like to buy Spanish players.

"It's easier bringing in players from your own country.

"If someone who can speak the language and knows the culture, it doesn't mean they are a better player, but they certainly have a head start.

"At the moment I'm not going to rule out anything. I'm the manager and whatever is coming out of people's mouths at the moment, I'm the one buying the players and making the decisions.

"If there is a good foreign player who can do a job, I will try to bring in him.

"The British market is a lot easier but sometimes British players are more expensive than those on the Continent."

Jewell talked with chairman Dave Whelan before Tuesday's promotion celebrations.

And they will talk further when they fly to Barbados with the players and coaching staff tomorrow.

Jewell said: "I have been in this situation before and know the type of player needed.

"The fans will be desperate for us to make signings straight away, wondering who we will get and which internationals we will sign.

"We have to be patient and not snatch at the first one.

"I will take my time and always choose the right player.

"If I couldn't sign the right player until the start of the season, I wouldn't do it.

"I know we need strengthening but it doesn't mean I'm going to spend whatever just for the sake of it.

"I've already had agents on the phone and as soon as the final whistle went on Sunday – the vultures were circling.

"It is a tricky process, picking and choosing, spending the right money on the right player in any league.

"But we're now in the Premiership, arguably the best league in Europe."
