Paper Talk: Jewell hopes to offer new deal to Jacko

The experienced centre-half has been linked with a move to Second Division promotion chasers Queens Park Rangers after finding himself on the bench in recent games.

But the Latics manager is determined to keep hold of the stand-in skipper and hopes to be in a position soon to start discussions over extending his stay.

He also hinted there will be new deals offered to a number of other players in the squad, who like Jackson, are in the final few months of their current deals.

Reports at the weekend suggested QPR boss Ian Holloway has made Jackson a transfer target after a move for Burnley's Arthur Gnohere fell through.

A switch, though, looks out of the question with the former Norwich and Everton defender the only back-up for current first-choice pairing Jason de Vos and Ian Breckin.

Jewell said: "There are always calls between managers so I don't really want to comment on this.

"But I'm going to try and offer Jacko a new deal here as I think all the lads who have got us to where we are deserve something.

"I couldn't let him go because he is very close to the team, an integral part of the squad, and a good pro.

"If we get an injury or suspension to one of the central defenders, Jacko would slot back in there and arguably could stay in for the rest of the season.

"I would like to give him the opportunity to be here next season, and while I know there comes a time in certain players' careers when they need to play, I don't want to be seen to be discarding him.

"I'm not a sentimental guy as you know, but the squad we have here is a good group.

"The guys who have served us well deserve a little bit of loyalty back from the club.

"It is a case of sitting down in the next few weeks and seeing what we can do."
Jackson, 32, was an ever present in the first half of the season before a three-match ban for a red card against West Ham sidelined him.

He has since had to make do with a seat on the bench, with de Vos and Breckin the preferred option at the moment.

Other players out of contract in the summer include de Vos, Andy Liddell, Paul Mitchell, Mike Flynn, Gary Walsh and Peter Kennedy.

Northern Ireland international Kennedy was told in November that he wouldn't be getting offered fresh terms.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jason Jarrett is an early fitness doubt ahead of Saturday's home game with Derby County.

He suffered a tight hamstring in the 3-1 win at Ipswich and was replaced during the second half by Lee McCulloch.

Jewell said: "I saw him stretching it a little bit in training on Friday and he started feeling it again during the game.

"He didn't want to come off – that is the measure of him – but hamstrings can be niggling and we didn't want it to get any worse.

"Jason was in for treatment on Sunday and again yesterday, so we'll have to see how he gets on."

* Walsall have announced midfielder Paul Merson has left the country to seek treatment for what the Saddlers have described as "addictive problems".

The 35-year-old former England international has fought battles against drink, drugs and gambling problems, with the Saddlers now resigned to losing his services for a period likely to run into weeks rather than days.
