Paper Talk: Jewell eyes quality control

The Championship high flyers drew a blank for only the second time in the league this season at Watford in midweek, something manager Paul Jewell wasn't at all happy with.

So it is hoped the familiar surroundings of the JJB Stadium can see them hitting form in front of goal against a Millers side rooted to the bottom of the table and without a league victory all season.

But Latics will have to manage without part of their supply line, winger Gary Teale having been ruled out of action for the next few weeks with strained knee ligaments.

He limped out of the Watford clash just after half-time and the time estimate put on his recovery is between three and six weeks - the same one given to skipper Matt Jackson who has a similar problem.

Teale's place is likely to go to David Graham, and it would be his first league start since signing from Torquay in the summer.

Latics' assistant manager Chris Hutchings said: "Gary is definitely out of the Rotherham game and the doctors are saying it will be three to six weeks before he can play again.

"He's tweaked his ligaments and that's a big disappointment because we already had injuries in the squad.

"It's similar to what Matt Jackson has done, so it looks like we'll be without those two for around the same length of time.

"But it is difficult to put an accurate time scale on these things because players heal at different rates - some are quicker than others.

"We'll have to be patient with them and make sure their hearts aren't ruling their heads when they say they're ready to play again.

"It's always disappointing when you get players injured, but it's part and parcel of football and it will give some of the other lads a chance."

While Teale drops out, Lee McCulloch returns to the squad after missing the Watford game through suspension.

He's set to go straight back into the team on the left side of midfield, freeing Alan Mahon to compete with Gareth Whalley for a central midfield slot alongside Jimmy Bullard.

At the back, Emerson Thome will again deputise for Jackson after putting in a solid display in midweek.

Hutchings and Jewell will be stressing to the Latics players not to under-estimate Rotherham tomorrow despite their visitors lowly position.

The assistant boss said: "We weren't that happy with the performance at Watford so we want to see a big improvement.

"The back four and John Filan did well, but other than that, we weren't our normal selves.

"We need to show more quality going forward, something we've perhaps not down in the last couple of games.

"It will be a case of having to be patient tomorrow because Rotherham will want to come here and keep things tight.

"Their start to the season will have worried Ronnie Moore, and his first aim will be to keep a clean sheet and try and build from there.

"They'll try and restrict our play, so we have to be aware of that.

"Up front, Rotherham have got Mark Burchill who had a month on loan with us last season.

"He's sharp and elusive so he's one we'll have to keep our eye on."
