Paper Talk: Jarrett to battle on with Latics

The midfielder has yet to kick a ball in the first team for the Championship promotion hopefuls this season after battling back to fitness from a serious ankle injury.

He was an unused substitute in last Saturday's defeat to Stoke, but merely his presence on the bench was a factor in the Potters cooling their desire to sign him on loan for a second time.

Jarrett played three games for Tony Pulis' side last month, including their FA Cup defeat at Arsenal.

His loan spell ended last week but Pulis expressed an interest in renewing the loan once Latics' clash with Stoke was out of the way.

But a return would have used up two of Stoke's eight permitted loans – had he not been on the bench at the JJB, it could have been extended and counted as just one spell.

The player himself is keen to stay with Latics and force his way into Paul Jewell's plans before his contract ends in the summer.

Latics boss Jewell is pleased to have Jarrett back in his squad but has warned the 25-year-old he might have to be patient.

He said: "Jason did well in those three games with Stoke an he's back here champing at the bit for a game now.

"But he has to be patient because he's had a nasty injury and it takes time to recover and get the sharpness back.

"It's a chicken and egg thing. You only get your match sharpness back playing in games – reserve team football is part of the rehabilitation process – but there's nothing like playing a proper first team match."

While Jewell hasn't been shy of loaning out fringe players this season, that practice is set to stop for now as Latics concentrate on their push for Premiership football.

Jewell hasn't the biggest of squads and needs all available cover for the final 15 games.

He said: "I've had three or four enquiries for my players to go out on loan but at this time of the season we want everyone to be available to us.

"At this stage, it's about the whole squad and at the moment we've got some good players who aren't in the team – Jarrett, Gareth Whalley, David Graham and Steve McMillan for example.

"They've all got their part to play and are very much part of things here."

* The home game against Leeds a week on Saturday is all ticket. Latics are expecting their biggest crowd of the season – Leeds have already sold 4,000 of their allocation.

* Latics Reserves were in action this afternoon against their Sheffield United counter-parts at Chesterfield's Saltergate ground.
