Paper Talk: Handy man

The club's record signing netted twice in the second half at Home Park as Latics triumphed 2-1 to stay top of the Championship.

He played with his left hand wrapped in bandages to protect his little finger which he recently had surgery on to repair a torn tendon.

Roberts is now the division's leading scorer with 10 goals and Jewell was full of praise for his weekend's performance.

He said: "All jokes aside about Jason, he has had an injury to his little finger which is quite a serious one.

"For a while he will have to play with his hand clenched in a fist and that's not ideal because he's always going to wary of falling on it.

"To come through a game so soon after the surgery and get two goals is great, and we're delighted.

"Mind you, I felt like bandaging his eyes up at half-time after he missed a great change in the first half!

"It wasn't a great effort but that happens with strikers, they miss them and then come back and score."

Nathan Ellington was the supplier of both goals, his flicked header sending Roberts clear for the first before an off- target shot took a big deflection off his strike partner's chest to wrap the points up.

Jewell said: "I've got to admit we were fortunate with the second goal but the first one was a great move.

"A lot of people talk about Nathan's pace but he is also outstanding in the air and he won the ball well to flick it on.

"Once Jason got through, he used his body to hold their lad off and knocked it nicely over the keeper.

"I thought we looked like scoring almost every time we attacked and we thoroughly deserved the victory."

It wasn't just the strikers who caught Jewell's eye as Jewell was extremely impressed with the display of his defence.

Unfortunately, Latics lost the services of right-back Nicky Eaden to a hamstring strain just after the hour mark, almost certainly ruling him out of the Crewe game at the JJB tomorrow night.

It leaves Jewell desperately short of numbers – Tony Dinning surprisingly didn't make the trip to Devon – and he could now recall Paul Mitchell from a loan spell at Swindon to make sure the squad has enough cover.

He said: "Nicky had a fitness test before we left on Friday morning and trained when we arrived later in the afternoon, and he was fine.

"Unfortunately he over-stretched for the ball during the game and tweaked his hamstring again.

"It's a risk we took and while I'm not saying it backfired, I would think he is struggling for tomorrow.

"Until he went off, Nicky was excellent while I thought Ian Breckin was outstanding, getting his head on absolutely everything.

"Plymouth got behind us a couple of times early on, but really we restricted them and they didn't cause us too many problems."

Saturday's game started 30 minutes late after an electrical fault caused Home Park's emergency alarm system to activate.

Fans were left outside in the rain until after 2pm when the problem was fixed, although safety chiefs only let the game go-ahead on condition that no smoking was allowed in any of the stands.

It capped off an eventful journey to Devon for the Latics squad, with the team bus developing a fault on the M6 while the hotel they stayed in on Friday was not to the usual standard.
