Paper Talk: Hands off

A host of Premiership club scouts have been keeping tabs on Latics' flying start to the season ahead of the January transfer window.

Star striker Nathan Ellington was this week linked with a £3m switch to Birmingham, while Jimmy Bullard and Leighton Baines are among those catching the eye.

But Jewell isn't entertaining the prospect of any of his players leaving the JJB Stadium and knows the backing of chairman Dave Whelan would make it difficult for top flight clubs to mount a serious bid.

In fact, he believes only "outrageous money" could persuade Latics to sell the players who are central to his first-team plans.

Jewell said: "I don't think it's inevitable that bids will come in during the next transfer window, and if they do, clubs are wasting their time unless it's the ones we want to sell and there aren't many of them.

"I'm in a privileged position as a manager that if a bid did come in, I could go and see the chairman and it would be turned down.

"To be honest, I probably wouldn't even go to him because I know we don't want to sell players and we don't have to sell.

"If we want to sell we will, if we don't, we won't.

"I've remarked in the past how amazed I am about the few times my phone has rang with regard to selling players.

"There isn't a lot of money in the game and for us to accept an offer for players we want to keep would take outrageous money.

"I don't think clubs are going to pay outrageous money for any of our players."
Leading scorer Ellington is the player who seems to be attracting most of the attention, the link to Birmingham following on from interest from Bolton last month.

But Latics wouldn't want to sell a player who tops the Championship goal charts and break up his double act with Jason Roberts.

They have him under contract until the end of the 2005/06 season and the Duke knows he could be playing Premiership football at the JJB next term.

Far from wanting to sell players, Jewell is eager to add to the squad and his efforts continue to successfully raid the transfer market.

He was down to 17 fit players last weekend although that number could rise to 18 in time for Sunday's visit to Leeds as right-back Nicky Eaden is making good progress in his recovery from a hamstring strain.

Jewell said: "We're a very close-knit squad here but I would like to bring in one or two more players while I could do with some of the injured lads coming back.

"With the amount of games you have to play in the Football League, we need a bigger squad.

"Nicky might have a chance of being in the squad at the weekend but we'll have to be careful as you saw what happened when he was desperate to play at Plymouth the other week.

"Gary Teale did some running with the physio yesterday morning but I'd say he is still two or three weeks off a return to the team."

Latics reserves were entertaining Rotherham United's second string at the Robin Park Arena this afternoon.

With the first-team squad stretched to the limit, David Lowe's side is mainly expected to made up of youth team players.
