Paper Talk: Graham is Jewell gem

Goalscorer: David Graham
The Scotsman had endured a frustrating time in front of goal since his £215,000 summer move from Torquay, but was on target in the 4-1 home victory over Coventry.

He found the net eight minutes into the second-half, tucking the ball home from close range after a Jason Roberts cross had been palmed out by the Sky Blues keeper.

And it helped settle the nerves after Latics had endured an uncomfortable first-half ride against Peter Reid's side.

Jewell said: "David has been unlucky as far as goalscoring is concerned, with his shots either whistling just past the post or being well saved by the goalkeeper.

"But he finally got the ball into the net this time, and although he was playing out wide, it was a good striker's goal from inside the six-yard box.

"Ironically he was probably having his poorest game until he scored, although once he scored he looked a different player.

"In the first-half we'd had a few problems down that side, but after the interval, him and David Wright linked up very well.

"I'm pleased for him and hopefully it will be the first of many because he's a great footballer with loads of ability."

Alan Mahon had given Latics a 14th minute lead before Eddie Johnson headed Coventry level just after the half-hour.

Graham's strike restored their advantage, Nathan Ellington and substitute Mike Flynn later netting headers to wrap up their second 4-1 victory in a matter of days.

The win was their fourth in a row and stretched the unbeaten run in the league to an impressive 15 games.

They stayed three points clear of second place Reading and now enjoy a six-point cushion over Ipswich in third.

Jewell conceded that Latics had been second best to their visitors in the first-half and he needed to change things tactically at half-time to put them on the road to victory.

"In the first-half Coventry were very good and were better than us in all departments," he said.

"I was pleased to go in at 1-1 because one or two things needed ironing out, and in the second-half the lads did very well and played some good stuff.

"Not many sides have come here to have a go, and while I saw Peter's comments before the game about perhaps playing a 4-5-1, maybe the best way is having a go at us which they did. What we have to realise is that we won't play well every game and that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

"If we have to make it scrappy and a bit a fight, so be it. There will be times when they have to roll up their sleeves and hang on for a 1-0 win.

"I'd love them to be playing fast flowing football all the time, but that won't happen.

"If you are going to be a side at the top end of the table, you have to have more than one way of winning a football match."

Jewell had words of praise for skipper Matt Jackson who returned to the side in place of Emerson Thome after a four week absence with knee ligament damage.

He said: "When Emo did his hamstring on Tuesday, Jacko wasn't even in the frame because he'd been out for a month.

"But he showed his grit and determination, and slotted in well at the back.

"He was a little bit rusty at times but his experience got him through.

"I think we'll be without Emo for another fortnight and Nicky Eaden for about the same length of time.

"We know we're stretched to the limit in terms of numbers at the moment and we're still trying to strengthen."
