Paper Talk: Goal promise

Latics' record signing has bagged 11 goals in the opening 23 games of this season, although his strike in the 5-0 mauling of Preston earlier this month was his first since mid-October.

However, he believes he is still on target to match his career record of a goal every other game.

Roberts said: "I would have been happy with 11 goals by this point at the start of the season. Goals for me at this level have never been a
problem so I am not going to worry. I am a striker and scoring goals is my thing.

"I have always averaged a goal every other game and I am well on target to do that this season and I'm sure I will.

"People judge strikers on paper by how many goals they get in how many games – that is the harsh reality.

"I am not going to shirk away and I will never worry about going through spells when I am not scoring.

"The main thing is that we get promoted."

The 26-year-old, who netted eight in 14 games after joining in a £1.5m switch from West Bromwich Albion in January, is looking forward to Tuesday night's top-of-the-table tussle at Ipswich Town – and a meeting with ex-Latics favourite Jason de Vos.

The Canadian defender, who joined the Tractor Boys on a free transfer in the summer, was in Wigan's line-up when they ran out 3-1 winners at Portman Road last February.

Roberts netted the visitors' opener that day and is hoping to put one over his old team-mate next week.

He said: "There is no-one much better than Jason in the air. He is really strong and a good player and I am looking forward to coming up against him and we will see what I am made of – it would be great to score against him.

"He never used to kick me in training and this will be the first time I have played against him. We do not have to talk about that game too much
because everyone is aware of what is at stake."

Roberts is steering clear of referees after already collecting four bookings this season.

He picked up two red cards and two yellows last season, and knows one more caution will see him pick up an automatic one-match ban.

He said: "It is not something I am thinking about too much. I am trying to be positive and in the last two games I have tried not to speak to referees at all.

"It has helped that we have been winning, but we will have to see how it goes when we are not winning."

Meanwhile, former Latics midfielder Tony Dinning has spoken of his relief at finally agreeing a move away from the JJB Stadium. The 29-year-old completed his move to League One side Bristol City earlier this month after falling out of favour with Jewell.

The one-time record signing said: "Wigan was a dream move for me, but things happened and it went sour.

"I never again want to be in the position of feeling trapped and not enjoying training, not to mention playing in the reserves all the time."
