Paper Talk: Four-some

An impressive attacking display put Latics into a 4-1 lead with less than 15 minutes left, but two late City goals left them hanging on at the end.

So while delighted with the victory, Jewell was quick to hand out a dressing down over the manner of their defending.

A JJB Stadium record crowd of 25,017 saw the seven-goal Boxing Day
bonanza, and the victory kept Latics in sixth place and on course for a swift arrival at the 40-point survival mark.

Value

It also put them in good heart for tomorrow night's visit to West Ham, with the squad setting off for London this afternoon to begin their preparations.

Latics recovered from conceding a second-minute Antonie Sibierski goal yesterday, as Jason Roberts (2) and Lee McCulloch hit the target before half-time.

Henri Camara made it 4-1 in the second half before Joey Barton and Andy Cole netted to set up the grandstand finish.

Jewell said: "It was a value for money game I guess and everyone who came along, whether they were supporting Wigan, City or were just a neutral, would have enjoyed it.

"In the first half, we played some smashing stuff but at 3-1, Polly (Mike Pollitt) kept us in it with three or four unbelievable saves.

"We then got our fourth goal, and let's have it right, the game should have been over at that stage.

"But we got cocky, started having a few 'oles' and that really annoyed me.

"It shows you can't take your foot off the gas at this level because otherwise you will get punished. We have to be a bit more professional than we were at 4-1.

"Saying that, some of our play in the first half was fantastic. We bounced back from that kick in the teeth in the first couple of minutes and looked really dangerous on the break.

"Earlier in the season, we were dogged without looking like we had a million goals in us. But just at the moment, we have started to score goals again, That's nine in the last three games.

"There has been all the talk about us bringing another striker in and suddenly our strikers have started scoring again – long may that continue."

Jewell added: "We knew City would come at us in the second half and they should take enormous credit for that.

"They didn't throw the towel in and at 3-1 there only looked like one team who would score – and it wasn't us.

"But we hit them on the break and made it 4-1, and the game should have been over with 15 minutes to go.

"We started doing the wrong things in the wrong areas, and we almost paid the price for that.

"I would have been gutted if I'd had to sit here after a 4-4 draw and say we should have done better.

"In the end it was easier for me to get into the players after the game – which I did – to point out what I didn't like.

"I told them they deserved a lot of credit for the win, but that we couldn't take liberties in the Premiership.

"If we have to make the game ugly late on, we should do, as long as we win it."

Jewell picked out Pollitt for special praise as the well-travelled keeper again caught the eye with a portfolio of good saves.

He said: "Polly is doing exceptionally well considering he is 42 or whatever age he is now!

"He has been around the block a couple of times and has seized his chance to get into the team here.

"Polly was unfortunate to lose his place earlier in the season, but he's worked
exceptionally hard since then and knows he has to play well to stay in."

Jewell reported no fresh injuries from yesterday's game, although he's
likely to tinker with the side at Upton Park tomorrow as he tries to keep the squad fresh over the busy festive programme.
