Paper Talk: Focus is firmly on Forest

The manager wants them to stay focused on the last two games and not think about how their rivals are doing.

Latics go to Nottingham Forest on Saturday before hosting West Ham at the JJB on the final day of the season.

If they hold their nerve in both, they will secure a top six place and a chance to reach the Premiership via the Millennium Stadium.

Jewell said: "It is in our hands because if we win our last two games, that will be enough. They are very difficult games but two that we are looking forward to.

"If we play as well as we did against Sunderland and take a bit more care in the right areas, we will do enough to win those games.

"It's important we concentrate on our own position rather than on how other teams are doing.

"Of course I do study the league table and look at who teams are playing, every manager does. But we aren't reliant on other teams' results at the moment, it is all down to us.

"I'm sure the first thing the players do when they get home is to put the television on and look at the table, but I'm trying to keep them relaxed.

"I don't like them talking to the press at this time of year because things they say sometimes don't look right in print.

"We don't need to stoke up any fires at the moment, I just want the players to come in for training and prepare for the games."

There will be huge crowds for both games, increasing the pressure further.

A near full house is expected at the City Ground on Saturday with Forest fans already having snapped up most seats in the home sections. Latics have sold around 1,200 of their allocation but fans can pay at the away turnstiles.

For the final game, tickets are selling at a healthy rate in both Wigan and at West Ham.

The Hammers have already sold more than 5,000 of their 7,200 allocation, with the rest expected to go next week.

Jewell said: "We are playing for big stakes, our concern is just getting to the play-offs.

"We have had a great season, I've really enjoyed it as manager, and now I want to try and finish off with a couple of victories or whatever we need to be in the top six.

"If we get enough points to make the play-offs, it would be very exciting.

"We all know it's very tight at the top, right down to Reading in ninth place.
I would think most teams would swap places positions with Sunderland, but not even they are guaranteed anything yet."

Meanwhile, Peter Kennedy is in the Northern Ireland squad for tonight's friendly against Serbia in Belfast.

The left-sided player hasn't appeared in the Latics squad since December and is leaving the club in the summer. He recently returned to training after a hernia operation.
