Paper Talk: Feeling good

Latics will be promoted to the top flight if they beat Reading at a packed JJB Stadium on Sunday (kick-off 1pm).

And Jewell has already detected a confident edge among the squad as they prepare for what for many of them will be the biggest game of their career.

He said: "The preparation for the Reading game is something that is exciting myself and the players here.

"The training this week has been as good as I have seen it this season and that gives me great hope for the weekend because they've been sharp and lively.

"I sensed some nervousness in the camp last week ahead of the Preston game but that seems to have gone now.

"This time we know exactly what is needed and there is only one scenario which matters – if we win, we're up.

"Last week we talking about promotion if we won at Preston and Ipswich slipped up against Crewe, but that's gone from the equation now.

"It's down to us, if we win on Sunday it's good enough and it doesn't matter about how Ipswich get on.

"I'm glad there is only that equation and I don't think you can ask for anymore than that.

"I heard Steve Coppell on the radio or television the other day saying that we had more to lose than Reading do.

"That left me scratching my head working that one out.

"If we lose or don't get the result we still get a second bite at the cherry through the play-offs.

"We can't approach this game with fear, we must approach it with vigour and positive attitudes.

"This season we have got more points than Reading, scored more goals and conceded less than them.

"All the balls are in our court and we have to go out there and prove we are better than them on the day."

Jewell will have a full strength squad to chose from on Sunday as the treatment table is thankfully gathering cobwebs at the moment.

He has known since early in the week which side he will play – the last two training sessions permitting – but was keeping his cards close to his chest on that front.

Ian Breckin will make his 100th start for the club, the centre-half a virtual ever- present in the past two seasons following a stop-start first year at Latics.

Partnering him at the back is Matt Jackson, and the skipper very much looking forward to the challenge ahead.

He said: "It's great that it all comes down to our performance and our result.

"The worry we had going into the Preston game that things could have ended up out of our hands is over now.

"It suits us that this will be a competitive game.

"We have dropped points this year to teams which maybe we should have beaten, but we have always played well against teams who have competitive and had a go at us.

"We are trying to keep our routine ahead of the game as stable as possible because the game of football doesn't change very much.

"The worst thing you could do is to start being superstitious in the final week of the season. What has worked for us so far this season and got us into this position has been sticking together, working hard in training and adopting a good routine."

A crowd of around 19,000 is expected, the three home stands sold out by the close of business last night.
