Paper Talk: Excitement guaranteed

His Wigan Athletic side are in a three-way battle with Sunderland and Ipswich for the automatic promotion slots, while a queue of clubs are competing to get in the play-offs.

The Championship resumes this weekend after a fortnight's Easter break with more twists and turns predicted before the final afternoon of the season on May 8.

Jewell said: "I think the Championship is far more interesting than the Premier League has been all season.

"The Premier League has effectively been over since December with what Chelsea have done, and it has really been about second, third and fourth.

"That's all very well but in our league, any team down to 10th or 11th can sneak into the play-offs while it's a big race between the top three.

"Preston and Derby aren't mathematically out of automatic promotion either, so it's all to play for at the moment.

"Everywhere you go people are talking about the Championship rather than the Premiership because that's been over for so long."

Jewell, though, would love to leave the Championship behind to join the top flight, and is enjoying every kick of the promotion battle.

He's got his focus firmly fixed on Saturday's home game against West Ham and knows taking three points off the Hammers would set Latics up nicely to face current leaders Sunderland on Tuesday night.

"We're second in the league and have a great chance of getting promotion, so of course I'm enjoying it," said Jewell.

"I watched an interview with Iwan Roberts on television the other day, and he was saying how last year he was trying to get promotion with Norwich and now he's at Cambridge trying to stay in the league.

"He said one situation was enjoyable, the other proper pressure, so we should all be enjoying trying to get promoted."

The full Latics squad were back together today, Graham Kavanagh and Leighton Baines joining up after being on international duty for the past 10 days.

Kavanagh played in the Republic of Ireland's friendly win over China on Tuesday night while Baines has been with the England Under-21s but didn't see any action.

That was due to a minor knee injury, Under-21s coach Peter Taylor taking the decision not to play him and risk aggravating the problem.

Jewell is confident Baines will be fit to face West Ham and is expected to stick with the side which drew against Nottingham Forest in their last outing.

The visit of the Hammers and Sunderland will draw big crowds to the JJB, the clash with the Black Cats possibly attracting a club record.

The current record stands at 20,669 for the final game of last season against West Ham, and ticket sales this week have been encouraging.

A club spokesman said: "Sunderland have sold their 7,400 allocation in the East Stand and our supporters are showing plenty of interest.

"Our biggest home turn-out was for the Ipswich game when there were 13,605 Wiganers in a crowd of just over 16,000."
