Paper Talk: Dream Start

Latics will host Jose Mourinho's men on August 13 and visit Manchester United just 10 days later.

Manager Paul Jewell said: "Chelsea at home – what a start and what a fixture.

"We've worked incredibly hard to reach the Premier League and now this is our big reward."

Last season's runners-up Arsenal come to the JJB Stadium on November 19, while Latics will lock horns with Manchester City at the JJB Stadium on Boxing Day.

Latics wrap up their Premier League campaign in what will be Arsenal's last ever game at Highbury on May 7.

Excitement

Delighted chairman Dave Whelan said: "The whole season is a mind-boggling prospect for Wigan, and Chelsea at home and Manchester United away in the
first fortnight is simply unbelievable.

"The sheer excitement of looking at those fixtures today with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle v Wigan is incredible.

"What has happened at this football in the past 25 years is phenomenal, and sometimes I can't believe it myself.

"We've come from non-league and the old Fourth Division to play in the best league in the world, and that's an amazing achievement.

"In those days we played in front of 1,500 loyal supporters at the old Springfield Park and next season it will be 65,000 at Old Trafford and 40,000 at Highbury.

"It really is a football fairytale.

"Wigan's a massive sporting town, with Warriors in the top flight of rugby league and Latics in the Premiership, and we should all be incredibly proud of that today."

"The other day we launched the new shirt and it was wonderful to see so many fans in it.

"The blue and white striped kit is a throwback to 1978 when we first arrived in the Football League and an era when we had great characters like Harry McNally – it really was a special time.

"Harry signed our manager Paul Jewell for Wigan, and the older supporters from that era will be pinching themselves today when they sit down and look at the fixture list.

"Now we are in the Premiership, the difference is another universe."

Meanwhile, Jason Jarrett has linked up with Norwich City after saying 'no' to a new contract with Latics.

Jarrett, who was available on a free transfer, will link up with Norwich when his contract expires next week.

He was offered a three-year deal by Latics, but will now try and help the Canaries return to the Premiership.
