Paper Talk: Dig in there

The Latics manager was disappointed by a lack of fight from the players in Saturday's 2-2 draw with an under-strength Watford.

And he left them in no doubt as to what he expects to see when Latics return to league action after their two-week break.

Jewell said: "We have 16 games left and at this stage it's whoever keeps their bottle and wants it more who will get promoted.

"It won't be about who are the nicest footballers, it's all about who is prepared to roll their sleeves up, who is prepared to stick their head and foot in, who is prepared to do the unglamorous things.

"In the first half against Watford, we didn't do those things and that's something I pointed out in the dressing room.

"I'd say the first half was as poorly as we have played in a long, long time.
"We were really sloppy, didn't take the game by the scruff of the neck, and we seemed to sit back thinking someone else would do it.

"In the second half, we were a bit better but we're looking on this result as two points dropped.

"It was Watford who set the tempo in the first 10 or 15 minutes, they broke on us and had pace up front which we didn't seem able to respond to.

"A few things were said at half-time and when we scored out equaliser to make it 2-2, I thought we might have gone on to win.

"But we huffed and puffed and didn't have enough chances to do that."

Latics faced a much-changed Hornets side as boss Ray Lewington rested most of his regulars ahead of tomorrow night's Carling Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

But the visitors still managed to twice take the lead through Bruce Dyer and Danny Webber. Lee McCulloch equalised both times.

Jewell said: "When we saw the team sheet before the game, we tried to stress to our players that the Watford lads would be hungry to show the manager they were worthy of a place on the bench for their big game with Liverpool.

"It didn't seem to register because in the first half, it looked like Watford were the ones trying to get into the Premiership, not us.

"Even after we equalised, we looked edgy, and while we can't be fluent every week, you can certainly still get in people's faces.

"What we can be positive about, though, is two excellent headed goals from Lee

McCulloch which came from good crosses from Nicky Eaden and Gary Teale.

"We now have a two-week break until the next game, and there is plenty of work to do on the training ground to tighten up certain areas.

"It would have been nice to have a victory and then two weeks off, but that's not to be."

Meanwhile, Jewell has urged the Latics supporters to be the side's 12th man.
He was disappointed with the atmosphere on Saturday.

Jewell said: "I got into trouble the last time I spoke about this, but the atmosphere was nothing in the first half.

"It can be argued it is up to the players to generate it, but it would be nice to have some more vocal noise – we didn't get that.

"The crowd can be our 12th man, they are part of the team.

"Sometimes when it's not happening on the pitch, we do need a lift from the crowd."
